Alson T. "Coach" Scrivner, 88 of Lima died at 8:40 P.M. Wednesday, January 30, 2013, at the Lima Convalescent Home.
He was born Thursday, January 8, 1925 in Richmond Kentucky. He was the son of the late Grover and Emma Scrivner.
On December 22, 1951, Al married Avice Roderick, who survives in Lima, Ohio.
Also surviving is son, Stuart (Laura) Scrivner of Harrison, OH; two daughters, Sandi (Tim) Frueh of Kettering, OH and Jennifer Scrivner of San Francisco, CA; two granddaughters, Ashley Scrivner and Thailyr Scrivner; also a brother LeRoy (Betty) Scrivner of Hamilton, OH.
He was preceded in death by four brothers: Ire Scrivner, Elbert Scrivner, Wayne Scrivner and Paul Scrivner; two sisters, Ina Sharp and Imogene Buck.
He served in the Army with the 252nd BD Army Combat Engineers from 1943-46. Al was a veteran of World War II where he was involved with the Normandy Invasion and The Battle of the Bulge.
Al was a 1944 graduate of Hamilton High School where he was inducted into their Athletic Hall of Fame in 2001. Al earned a BA degree from Cedarville College. He also attended The Ohio State University, Miami University where he was a 3-year football letterman under Sid Gillman, and Bowling Green State University.
He was a teacher and coach at Lima Senior High School, Lima, Ohio from 1958 thru 1982. He was the head football coach from 1962 thru 1973 where he won 7 GOL championships and Coach of The Year awards. He was the President of the Ohio High School Football Coaches Association from 1968-69. He also taught and coached at Piqua High School, Logan High School and Ironton High School. He belonged to Lima Trinity United Methodist Church, Lima, Ohio where he was a board member and Sunday school teacher. He was a member of the BPO Elks Lodge #54 where he was Exalted Ruler from 1980-81. He was a life member of the VFW #1275. Al was an avid buckeye fan, golfer and a charter member of Colonial Golfer's Club.
Friends may call Sunday, February 3, 2013 at the Chamberlain-Huckeriede Funeral Home from 12:00 P.M. -2:00 P.M. and 4:00 P.M.- 6:00 P.M with an Elks Lodge of Sorrow Service at 2:00 P.M.
Funeral Service will be on Monday, February 4, 2013 at the Chamberlain Huckeriede Funeral Home at 10:30 A.M. Rev. David Harris officiating. Graveside Military Honors will be conducted by VFW Post #1275. Entombment will be in the Woodlawn Mausoleum.
