Bertrand K. Macpherson

July 14, 1931 — October 28, 2021

Lima, OH

Bertrand K. Macpherson, 90, died at 2:13 a.m. on Thursday, October 28, 2021 at The Springs Health Facility on Eastown Road in Lima.

Mr. Macpherson worked for 40 years for 4 newspapers, including The Lima News. He was the oldest son of the late David F. Macpherson and Beryl Knickerbocker Macpherson, born July 14, 1931, in Oklahoma City, OK. His parents were musicians, entertaining friends with his mother on the piano and father as bass-baritone. Neither of their children followed as musicians. His mother later in her life wrote critical reviews for the arts for the Wichita Falls newspaper.

Randy Macpherson as Bertrand was known began his career as a sportswriter for the Wichita Falls (Texas) Times and Record News after leaving college at Midwestern University in Wichita Falls in 1955. At college he became sports publicity director after his freshman year. Before accompanying the football team on a trip, he was nicknamed "Sacklunch" by the head coach. Macpherson left college without his degree and found a job in the sports department of the Wichita Falls Record News.

His passion was covering high school football on Friday nights for the paper. In 1958, he became sports editor of the newspaper, then in 1960 he got a job in news at The Lima News. He worked in Lima and Wichita Falls twice, spending most of his career in Lima, where he was wire editor, news editor and farm editor, retiring in 1995.

On Dec. 16, 1961, Mr. Macpherson married Sarah Ann Moore, of Wichita Falls, who was the society editor of the paper. She worked at every newspaper that her husband did. She preceded him in death in 2012 after 50 years of marriage. The couple adopted two children, Richard D. Macpherson, and Julia K. Macpherson, both of Lima.

Mr. Macpherson also worked in news at the Idaho Statesman in Boise, Id., the state capital. He was then the wire editor of the morning edition of the San Angelo (TX) Standard Times. Covering the assassination of John F. Kennedy was the highlight there.

Uncovering his family ancestors was enjoyable during his retirement years.

Survivors also include his brother, Delancy M. Macpherson of Mt. Pleasant, SC; sister-in-law, Mrs. Lavacca Johnson of Iowa Park, TX; niece, Mrs. Tracy Otto of Wichita Falls; nephews Darell Jr. of Plano, Tex.,  and Lewis Johnson of Wichita Falls; nephew Stephen Macpherson of Lompoc, Calif.; niece Heather Macpherson of Fort Edward, NY; granddaughters, Anna Lee Macpherson of Lima; and Jessica Jane Albert of Kenton, OH.

There will be no visitation or funeral services. His ashes will be buried in Texas at a later date.

Arrangements handled by Chamberlain-Huckeriede Funeral Home, Lima.  Condolences may be expressed at www.chamberlainhuckeriede.com .
