Boyd Hayes Jr. 83, died at 11:45 p.m. January 13, 2008, at St. Rita?s Medical Center. He was born January 14, 1924, in Exeter, Virginia, to Boyd, Sr., and Para Katherine Christian Hayes, who preceded him in death. On December 14, 1941, he married Nannie Ellen Jackson, who died April 4, 2005. Mr. Hayes retired as a supervisor from Textron, after 35 years, and then worked in maintenance at J.C. Penney Co. Inc. for 13 years. He was a member of Lima Baptist Temple, where he was an usher. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving from June 23, 1943, to December 25, 1945. He served as a staff sergeant with Merrills Marauders in the Mars Campaign in Burma. He will posthumously receive the Bronze Star, WWII Victory Medal, and the Combat Infantry Badge, the Service Lapel Button and the WWII and Presidential unit citations. Survivors include four sons, Leon ?Lee? (Janelle) Hayes, of Elida, Ohio, Jerry (Dixie) Hayes and Dennis (Debbie) Hayes, both of Lima, Ohio, and Thomas Hayes, of Port St. Lucie, Florida; and 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Franklin D. Hayes and Onzie Eugene Hayes; and three sisters, Ruth Price, Juanita Parks and Thelma Linderman. Services will begin at 11 a.m. Thursday at Chamberlain-Huckeriede Funeral Home. The Rev. Ronald B. Cannon and Pastor Gary Hohman will officiate. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery Mausoleum with military rites by VFW Post 1275. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
