Carl O'Dell

CARL VERNON O'DELL, 77, died at 2:17 a.m. April 17, 2006, at Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Dayton, Ohio. He was born October 11, 1928, in Lima, Ohio to Oliver and Frances M. McComb O'Dell. His parents preceded him in death. On November 15, 1986, he married Nellie Patricia Briggs O'Dell, and she died December 22, 2005. Mr. O'Dell was a heavy-equipment operator with the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 18. He served from August 2, 1948, to June 2, 1952, in the Army. He was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1275, Lima, Ohio; Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 370 in Lima, Ohio; American Legion Post 96; and a 50-year member of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 18. He had worked on the railroad earlier in his life. He enjoyed fishing and sports, and had coached Little League baseball and football. Survivors include two sons, Michael O'Dell and Rodney (Tammy) O'Dell, both of Lima, Ohio; a daughter, Kathrine M. O'Dell of Lima, Ohio; 14 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, 5 stepchildren; 12 step grandchildren; and several step great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Vera Selover. Services will begin at 11 a.m. Thursday at Chamberlain-Huckeriede Funeral Home. Pastors Sue and Wesley Richards will officiate. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Lima, Ohio.
