Charles Daley

CHARLES WALTER DALEY, 80, died at 4:38 p.m. July 24, 2006, at St. Rita's Medical Center. He was born July 31, 1925, in Lima to William V. and Frances Fegan Daley, who preceded him in death. On Feb. 18, 1950, he married Shirley J. Figgins, who died Oct. 18, 1998. They had been married for more than 48 years. Mr. Daley was an attorney. He began his career in Washington D.C. in 1950, where he served in the solicitor's office at the U.S. Department of Agriculture and at a first lieutenant with the Army Judge Advocate General Corps at the Pentagon from 1951 to 1952. In 1953, he returned to Lima and entered private practice. He was a member of all four Catholic churches in Lima throughout his life and had been a member St. Charles Catholic Church since 1970. He was a member of St. John Holy Name Society and was involved in many activities in all of the parishes. He served on the Toledo Catholic Charities Board and most recently served on the Diocesan Board of Review. He was recognized for 50 years of participation at the Men of Milford Lawyers Retreat. He was a fourth degree Knights of Columbus. He was a 56-year member of the Ohio State Bar Association and served as president of the Allen County Bar Association in 1976. He was an original member of the Citizens Loan & Building Co. board of directors and served as chairman of the board for several years, particularly when Citizens became Americom Bank. He had also served as director of Mid-Am Bank. He was a longtime member of the Lima/Allen Chamber of Commerce board and the Lima Symphony Orchestra board. He provided legal support and direction to several local nonprofit organizations. He was recognized in 1998 for more than 20 years of service with the Allen Metropolitan Housing Authority. He served as president of the Allen County Community Welfare Council in the 1960s. He was secretary of the Lima Civil Service Board and instructor for the American Institute of Banking. He was a founding member of the Lima Serra Club, serving as president in 1974, and later as district governor. He was a member of Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge 54 and a former member of the Lima Lions Club. He was a founding and lifetime member of the Westside Swim and Racquet Club and a long time member of Orchard Hill Tennis Club. He was a 1943 graduate of St. Rose High School, a 1948 graduate of Ohio Northern University, Ada, and received his law degree in 1949 from the University of Cincinnati. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the European Theater, from Jan. 18, 1944, to June 23, 1946. He was an avid tennis and badminton player. Survivors include 10 children, Ed Daley, Maureen (Marty) Hydaker, Pam (Barry) Daley-Jennings, Douglas (Kathy) Daley, Kathleen Daley, Jennifer Brown, David (Robin) Daley, Jacque (Dennis) Daley-Perrin, Stephen Daley and Stephanie (Mike) Lambers; 18 grandchildren; Joshua Hydaker, Daniel Brennan, Jessica Jennings, Nicole Jennings, Lauren Jennings, Matt Woodworth, Scott Woodworth, Sean Daley, Shannon Daley, Isaac Moline, Connor Brown, Cory Brown, Aaron Rasor, Alec Perrin, Jacob Perrin, Kelly Lambers, Alana Lambers, Maura Lambers; and a brother, Richard Daley of Toledo. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Terry and Edward Daley; and two grandchildren. Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Charles Catholic Church. The Rev. Dan Zak will officiate. Burial will be in Gethsemani Cemetery, with military rites by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1275. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today, 4 to 8 p.m. Monday and 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Chamberlain-Huckeriede Funeral Home, where a wake service will be held at 8 p.m. Tuesday.
