CRUZ G. HERRERA Sr., 83, died at 1:25 a.m. October 30, 2006, at the residence of his grandson, Mario Marolez. He was born March 22, 1923, in Hebbronville, Texas, to Manuel V. and Theresa G. Gallardo Herrera, who preceded him in death. On Sept. 8, 1964, he married Catalina M. Segovia, who died December 29, 2000. Mr. Herrera retired in 1984 from DT&I Railroad Maintenance Way after 35 years. He was a member of St. Gerard Catholic Church, where he had been a member of its Men's Holy Society and Altar Rosary Society and was a pioneer of setting up Spanish Masses. He loved the outdoors, hunting, fishing and especially his family. He was a great advocate of all animals. Survivors include a son, Cruz G. Herrera Jr., of Lima, Ohio; a daughter, Gloria A. Furr, of Lima, Ohio; a stepson, Virgil Moralez, of California; eight grandchildren, D. Michael (Glenna), Howard (Mary Jo), Peggy (Richard), Pablo (Brenda), Mario (Pattie), Katrina (David), Homer (Tammy Jo) and Isaac (Laura); 28 great-grandchildren; 20 great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Feliz G. (Josefina) Herrera; and four brothers-in-law, Rudolpho Segovia, Reynaldo Segovia, Victor Segovia and Erby Segovia. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Herminia Herrera, Herlinda Trevino and Maria Hermelinda Luna. A Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Gerard Catholic Church. Father George Blasick will officiate. Burial will be in Gethsemani Cemetery.
