"D. D." Childers- Root

March 5, 1928 — December 15, 2014

"D. D." Childers-Root
86, died peacefully at 11:00 AM on Monday, December 15, 2014, at Springview Manor Nursing Home in Lima, Ohio.
"D. D." was born Mary Diane Durbin on March 05, 1928, in Lima, Ohio, to the late Francis W. Durbin and Agnes (Kelly) Durbin.
She was a graduate of St Rose High School and a graduate of Good Samaritan Hospital School of Nursing, Cincinnati, Ohio. After working at various doctor's offices and St. Rita's, she retired from Lima Memorial Hospital.
DD was a founding member of St. Charles Borromeo Parish, Parish council member, a lay Eucharistic Minister, member of the church Choir, the Knights of Columbus and the Elks. She helped to create the St. Charles Funeral Choir and the Parish Nurse Program. She was always a champion of connecting with people. Where she saw a need, she took action.
She was an avid reader, loved to play bridge, was a proud Cincinnati Reds Fan, attending 15 consecutive Opening Days and as the granddaughter of WW Durbin who served in FDR's administration, an unabashed New Deal Democrat.
She lived by three tenants: Faith, Family and Friends. She was a devoted Catholic, loved being surrounded by her family and extended family, and had incredible relationships with countless friends. The local restaurant economy lost a faithful breakfast, lunch and dinner patron.
She was proud to be from Lima and to have worked in the health care field as an RN in various capacities, following the Durbin family motto of 'others'. In 1975 DD and Jerry bought the Dairy Queen in Wapakoneta, Ohio. She then managed the daily operations for six seasons, earning the Silver Cone Award as the cleanest DQ in the district.
She is survived by three sons, William E. (Deborah) Childers, of Kent, OH, Mark A. Childers, of Cincinnati, OH, and Matthew D. Childers, of Lima, OH; four grandchildren, Sarah Childers, Benjamin (Elizabeth) Childers, Patrick Childers, Andrew Childers and Maxfield Carl; a sister, Sally Durbin- Wolfer; She was a beloved aunt to many nephews & nieces and several great nephews & nieces, and former daughter in law, Denise Driehaus.
She was preceded in death by: first husband, Gerald Childers who died January 24, 1981; second husband Albert Root Jr; a daughter, Mary Frances Childers; step mother, Florence (Hughes) Durbin; sister, Margaret M. Robenalt; brothers-in-law, John A. Robenalt and Ed Wolfer.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Friday, December 26, 2014 at Chamberlain-Huckeriede Funeral Home in Lima, Ohio. A Wake Service will be at 8:00 P.M. following the visitation.
