September 03, 2010 8:40 PM Lima - David R. ?Red? Burkhard, 84, died at 8:52 p.m. Sept. 2, 2010, at St. Rita?s Medical Center. He was born March 19, 1926, in Zanesville to Julius V. and Margaret Switzer Burkhard, who preceded him in death. Mr. Burkhard was a Navy veteran of World War II serving as a seaman 1st class and was the survivor of a Kamikaze attack. He had worked for Allied Painting, T.D. Quinn Painting Co. and Burkhard Painting Co. He was a member and former president of Fraternal Order of Orioles Nest 137. He was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1275, Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 199, American Legion Post 96, Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 370 and Benevolent & Protective Order of Elks Lodge 54. He was also a life member of Brotherhood of Painters and Allied Trades. Survivors include a daughter, Robbie (Larry) Spees, of Lima; a stepson, David (Joyce) Walker, of Lima; five grandchildren, Ammy (Eric) Griffin, Larry (Amanda) Spees, Joyce (Terry) Routson, Tracie Baker and Jodi Birchfield, all of Lima; nine great-grandchildren; a sister, Ruth Clark, of Dresden; and several nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by a sister, Rita Burkhard; and a brother, Russell Burkhard. Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Gerard Catholic Church. Father Joy Poonoly will officiate. Graveside services will begin at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Mount Olive Cemetery, Zanesville. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Chamberlain-Huckeriede Funeral Home, where a VFW services will be held at 4 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to VFW Post 1275.
