David T. Van Meter, 71, of Lima, Ohio died on Saturday, October 29, 2011, at 11:45 A. M. at his residence. He was born Sunday, June 9, 1940 in Helena, Montana, the son of the late David Van Meter and Grace (Chandler) Van Meter. On January 15, 1963, he married Sharon Halby who survives in Lima.
Mr. Van Meter served in the Army with the 101st Airborn at Ft. Campbell,KY and was an Honor Graduate BAC class 18 from Ft. Benning, GA. He was a life member of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 18 and retired after 30 years from Degan Excavating. For years he worked on and showed a 1974 Corvette and a 1932 Ford Coupe. He was very proud of the work he did and received a number of trophies and plaques. He liked nothing better than to ride his Harley and watch OSU and the Browns. His pride and joy were his children and grandson.
Surviving are a son, Michael D. Van Meter of Lima, a daughter, Tina J. Dancer of Lima and a grandson Austin M. Dancer of Lima. He is also survived by a brother, Sherman (Stephanie) Van Meter of Peoria, AZ and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by an Infant son John Scott Van Meter.
A funeral service will be at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, November 2, 2011 at Chamberlain-Huckeriede Funeral Home with the Rev. Doug Adams officiating.
Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Lima.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM and 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Tuesday, November 1, 2011, at Chamberlain-Huckeriede Funeral Home.
