David August Smith, age 83, died following a brief illness, on March 28th, 2013 at the Elderwood at Oakwood Nursing Home in Williamsville, New York.
David was born on February 3, 1930 in Paris, Texas, to the late Marguerite K. and August W. Smith.
The Family moved to Lima in early 1938.
David graduated from Lima Central. He attended Ohio Northern; graduated from Ohio State University, and then obtained Masters and PHD degrees in Geography from the University of Michigan. On June 17, 1951 he married Doris G. White, of Lancaster, Ohio, who survives.
David taught 1st at the University of Honolulu for one year, then at Penn State in State College, PA. He moved on to the State University of New York at Buffalo and retired after more than 30 years of service there.
He belonged to the Association of American Geographers, the National Railroad Association, and the National Railroad Historical society.
From his early hobby of model railroading, his love of trains, of travel and photography, led the Smiths to extensive travels. By train, plane, rental car, cruise liners, even steamboats on the Ohio and Mississippi rivers, they saw much of the world that he introduced his college students to in his classes. Probably his favorite "navigation" would have been the seven times they rented a narrowboat and leisurely toured the quiet, slow canals in England.
He especially loved steam railroading, and in every region he visited, searched for engines made in Lima, Ohio, at the Lima Locomotive Works where his father had been an employee.
He is also survived by a sister, Judy Evans Birkemeyer of Lima; one niece, Susan M. (Frank) Greene of Lexington, KY; two nephews Robin D. (Judy) Evans of Spencerville, IN; and Timothy D. (Patricia) Evans of Bluffton, OH; and several great nieces and nephews.
Funeral service was held in Williamsville, New York.
Interment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery in Lima.
