Dillon W. Staas, Jr. passed away in his sleep on July 30th in Lima, Ohio at the age of 93. He was born on November 13, 1928 in Allen County, Ohio.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dillon Staas, Sr. and Pauline Mae Bryan Fess. He is survived by his wife of nearly 70 years, Helen (Stoddard) Staas; his children: Dillon (Becky) Staas, Guy (Sandy) Staas, Janie (Leon) Strasser, Karl (Cheryl) Staas, Donald (Theresa) Staas, Shara (Dennis) Bowsher, Nora (Danny) Williams, and Ginger (Doug) Fox; 28 grandchildren; and 65 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are his friends and neighbors of many years, Jeff and Teresa Grog and their children Conner and Summer.
He was a 1946 graduate of Lima South High School, and attended Ohio Northern University for two years. He proudly served six years in the U.S. Army, including the occupation of Japan and the Korean conflict, in which he served in the 8055 M.A.S.H. unit. He had a career in the United States Postal Service, retiring as Postmaster of Oakwood, Ohio.
He served on the boards of Lima Senior Citizens and Lima Sister Cities, with whom he participated in exchange trips to and from Harima-cho, Japan. He was a member of the VFW, American Legion, and the Korean War Veterans Association. He wrote the inscription on the Korean War Veterans Memorial in Lima’s Public Square. He was a member of Lima Lodge 205 of the Free and Accepted Masons, and the Scottish Rite Masons and Shrine. He attended St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Elida.
His hobbies included deer hunting in the Black Hills of South Dakota, and writing poetry, having published over two hundred poems. After retirement he enjoyed traveling, including trips to Europe and the Far East, and Caribbean cruises. In 2011 he was inducted into the Ohio Senior Citizens Hall of Fame.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 4, 2022 at Chamberlain-Huckeriede Funeral Home, Lima, with services immediately following at 4:00 p.m. The Reverend Dillon W. Staas, III will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or St. Rita’s Hospice of Lima.
