DONALD RALPH RUMER, 80, died at 3:15 a.m. October 18, 2005, at Otterbein-Cridersville, Cridersville, Ohio. He was born June 24, 1925, in Crestline to Porter S. and Delilah Good Rumer, who preceded him in death. He married Dorothy J. Poole, who died December 7, 1998. Mr. Rumer retired as owner of Rumer's Market, where he had worked for 31 years, and later worked at Clyde Evans Markets. He was a member of First United Church of Christ. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and had been a coach for midget football from 1948 to 1956. He was an Army veteran of World War II serving as a noncommissioned officer for 16 months with the 261st Infantry, 65th Division, as a heavy machine-gunner in France and Germany. He was a platoon sergeant for five months, instructing and training gunners in the use and operation of the .30-caliber water-cooled machine gun, and finished with the rank of staff sergeant. He was in the Army from September 17, 1943, to April 29, 1946. He was awarded the American Theater Ribbon, the Europe-Africa-Middle East Campaign Ribbon with two bronze stars, the Good Conduct Medal and the Victory Medal. Survivors include two sons, Donald L. (Margaret) Rumer of Oklahoma City and Dennis L. (Betsy) Rumer of Cridersville, Ohio; a daughter, Debra (Steve) Howell of St. Mary?s, Ohio; a sister, Juanita Neumeier of Trenton; a sister-in-law, Norma Lusk of Lima, Ohio; and nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Gene Rumer. Services will begin at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Chamberlain-Huckeriede Funeral Home. Pastor Edward Rinehart will officiate. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, with military rites by VFW Post 1275. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
