Earl "Rocky" Kimpel, Jr., 90 of Cridersville, Ohio died on Thursday, March 24, 2011, at Otterbein Nursing Home - Cridersville in Cridersville, Ohio.
Born Tuesday, October 5, 1920 in Lima, Ohio, he was the son of the late Earl M. Kimpel, Sr. and the late Catherine Fay Kimpel. He was the husband of JoAnn McClain Kimpel.
He was employed by Lima Sohio Refinery.
Earl "Rocky" Kimpel, Jr. was born October 5, 1920, in Lima, Ohio, to Earl M. and Catherine (Fay) Kimpel. He was a 1937 graduate of Lima South High School and later attended Ohio Northern University in Ada. During World War II, he served as United States Staff Sergeant with the Fifth Army and saw combat in North Africa, Sicily and Italy. He served from June 12, 1942 to October 14, 1945. On September 10, 1945, he married JoAnn McClain, and they celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary in 2009. He was employed as a Process Engineer at the Lima Sohio Refinery and retired in 1979 after 30 years. A lifelong resident of Lima, with a summer home at Indian Lake, he and JoAnn became residents at Otterbein Cridersville in April of 2008. His favorite pastimes included boating, and enjoying his Golden Retrievers Bart and Tyler and playing Bridge. Earl was a member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church in Cridersville. The family would like to express their gratitude to the nursing staff and workers at Otterbein-Cridersville. After the funeral service there will be a Kewpee meal at the church.
Surviving are sons, Rev. Dr. Jeffrey (Louise) Kimpel of Perrysburg, OH and Dan Kimpel of Los Angeles, CA., a grandson Jamie & Rosalinda Kimpel of Toledo, Ohio. He was preceded in death by a grandson Michael David Kimpel.
A Funeral service will be at 2:00 PM on Sunday at St. Matthews Lutheran Church located at 5050 St. Matthew's Dr. Lima, Ohio 45806 with the Rev. James Couser and Rev. Dr. Jeffrey Kimpel officiating. Interment will be in St. Matthews Cemetery, Lima, OH.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM on Sunday, March 27, 2011, at St. Matthews Lutheran Church, 5050 St. Matthew's Dr., Lima, Ohio. Memorial contributions may be sent to St. Matthews Lutheran Church, 5050 St. Matthew's Dr., Lima, OH 45806.
