EDWARD EUGENE PHALEN, 81, died at 9:34 a.m. February 6, 2006, at St. Rita's Medical Center. He was born February 3, 1925, in Lima, Ohio to Frederick A. and Mary Patterson Phalen, who preceded him in death. On November 23, 1945, in Covington, Kentucky, he married Catherine M. Howell, who survives in Lima, Ohio. Mr. Phalen had been a cement finisher for several area contractors. He was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1275 and a member of American Legion Post 96. He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, serving from April 10, 1943, to September 9, 1945. He was an avid NASCAR fan and loved to fish. Survivors also include 10 children, Edward E. (Debra) Phalen of Texas, Michael (Brenda) Phalen of Lima, Ohio, Jeffrey (Virginia) Phalen of Florida, Francis Phalen of Texas, Patrick Phalen, Tim (Janet) Phalen, Karen S. (Hubert) Wienken and Teresa L. Clark, all of Lima, Ohio, Randy (Robin) Gary of Wapakoneta, Ohio and Mary Leon of Lima, Ohio; a brother, Frederick (Janet) Phalen of Texas; a sister, Catherine Lamb of Lima, Ohio; and 24 grandchildren and 51 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, James Phalen; a brother, James Phalen; and a sister, Maxine Melson. Services will begin at 7 p.m. today at Chamberlain-Huckeriede Funeral Home, with military rites by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1275.
