Elton F. Hammond, Jr., 86 of Lima, Ohio died on Tuesday, June 21, 2011 in Houston, Texas
Born Friday, July 18, 1924 in the Philippines. He was the son of the late Elton Foster Hammond and Georgina Louise Leather Hammond. On September 23, 1946 he married Mary Katharine "Kitty" (Strong) Hammond ands she preceded him in death on March 31, 2002.
He was a Veteran of World War II. Mr. Hammond served his country loyally, was an inveterate volunteer in his community, and was a dedicated husband and father. An eagerness to help others characterized him as much as his love of outdoor adventure on his bicycle and designing and building model airplanes. He was a veteran of World War II and remained active in Army Reserves from which he retired as a Lt. Colonel after several decades of service. The son of a career army officer, he was born in the Philippines and lived at West Point, in Panama, and in numerous states before going to college, serving in the army during World War II, graduating from MIT and working as a mechanical engineer at Westinghouse in Philadelphia and Kansas City before he moved to Lima in 1959. He was dedicated to community service, from regular blood donations for 60 years (118 gallon) to serving on the vestry and as senior warden of Christ Church Episcopal, a dedicated volunteer in Tax Counseling for the Elderly, League of Women Voters, Girl Scouts, soap box derby. He was active in American Youth Hostels for over 40 years, he served as president and in numerous other capacities for the local council, the Lima Roadrunners, and on the national board of directors. He led bicycle trips throughout Ohio, around the country and to Europe, including riding the Tour of the Scioto River Valley 42 times (his goal was 50). He was competing in his fifth National Senior Games and had already won 3 medals in bicycle racing events in the past week; he died of injuries sustained while racing in a fourth event.
Surviving are two sons, Elton Foster Hammond, III of Bellevue, WA and Paschal "Pat" Strong (Sharon) Hammond of Ashland, WI, and two daughters, Sally Katharine "Kathie" Hammond of El Cerrito, CA and Mary Louise "Malou" (Wojciech Komorniki) Komornicka of Roseville, MN. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, Elizabeth, Jolanta, Brian, Elton IV, Christina, Sean, Janelle, and three great-grandchildren Elton V, Everett and Callum, a Special Friend: Rachel Makley and a sister Diane Dexter (Peter, MD) Wick, Huntsville, AL. He was preceded in death by a sister Georgina Mathews-Lamb
