Emily J. Grothjan, 94, passed away at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, December 7, 2022, at Mercy Health St. Ritas.
Emily was born on October 29, 1928 in St. Marys, Ohio, to Verling V. and Esther H. (Klosterman) Nelson. On June 9, 1951, she married Harry A. Grothjan who preceded her in death on October 18, 2017
Emily loved cooking, baking, golfing, and crocheting and made blankets for everyone in her family. She was a member of St. Charles Catholic Church, where she baked cakes for funeral meals. She volunteered at St. Vincent De Paul, the Soup Kitchen, and also read books to the children at the local schools. She also worked for her daughter Jan as an “office manager”.
She is survived by her children: Stephen Grothjan of Tulsa, OK, Karen (Eric) Hower of Lima, Jim (Stephanie) Grothjan of Cincinnati, Janice (John) Lause of Lima, Robert Grothjan of Lima, and Nancy (Chris) Sternad of Cleveland; grandchildren: Jason, Kirsten (Kurtis), Kayle, Stephen (Kim Kreuzman), Sarah (Jeff Krause), Evan, Brooke, Nickolas, Kyli, Bridget (Rockland), Bobby (Dannielle), Natalie, and Hannah; great-grandchildren: Kaleb, Kadyn, Khloe, Dominic, Sophia, Maddox, Greyson, Katelynn, Bobby, Joshua, Blake, and Adalin, and sisters: Linda Davis and Jeannie (Dick) Grunden.
She was preceeded in death by her husband, parents, great-granddaughter, Nadia McDonald, brother, Charles (Mary) Nelson, and brother-in-law, Bob Davis.
The family will receive friends from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, December 11, 2022 at Chamberlain-Huckeriede Funeral Home, Lima, Ohio, with a wake service beginning at 6:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11 a.m. on Monday, December 12, 2022 at St. Charles Catholic Church. Father Kent Kaufman will officiate. Entombment will follow at Gethsemani Mausoleum, Lima.
Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought our mother much joy. They loved coming to visit and bless her with laughter, hugs, and art to make her smile. We would also like to thank John and Karen Clements, Patty Whitney, and Marilyn Wannemacher for their compassion and care for our mother.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Shriners Hospital or St. Jude’s Hospital.
