Eugene V. ?Gene? Fuerst 84, died at 7:30 a.m. January 2, 2010, at St Rita?s Medical Center. He was born August 2, 1925, in Allen County, Ohio to John and Elizabeth Rode Fuerst, who preceded him in death. On June 25, 1949, in Ottoville, Ohio, he married Dorothy Honigford, who survives in Lima, Ohio. Mr. Fuerst was a member of St. Charles Catholic Church and was a Eucharist Minister and a RCIA sponsor. He was a salesman for Wrightway Food Service for 16 years. He served in the U.S. Army from December 9, 1943, to January 7, 1946. He was a corporal in the 347th Signal Company-Wing, serving in the Asiatic and Pacific Theater. He was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3740, Ottoville, Ohio, serving two terms as commander. He currently was a member of VFW Post 3035, Delphos, Ohio. He was a former mayor of Ottoville, Ohio. He loved traveling. He and his wife visited all 50 states. He was a fan of the Ohio State Buckeyes, Cleveland Indians and Browns. He had managed Millers Market in Ottoville for many years. Survivors also include two daughters, Patricia (Dennis) Koester, of Ottoville, Ohio, and Virginia (Robert) Livermore, of Sidney, Ohio; two sons, Daniel (Tonia Webb) Fuerst, of Fort Jennings, Ohio, and Michael (Michelle) Fuerst, of Elida, Ohio; eight grandchildren, Andrew Koester, Sarah (Stephen) Howell, Diana Koester, Aaron (Jenny) Fuerst, Kristy Fuerst, Melissa (Aaron Jones) Fuerst, Barry Livermore, and David Livermore; three great-grandchildren, Stephen Howell, Jonathan Howell and Grant Fuerst; and a former daughter-in-law, Julia Fuerst. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Michael Koester; two brothers, Richard Fuerst and Norbert Fuerst; and a sister, Martha Kramer. A Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church. The Rev. Stephen Blum and the Rev. Dennis Walsh will officiate.
