Eva Jean (Somers) Penhorwood, 89, joined her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in Heaven on February 22, 2018 at Bluffton Mennonite Memorial Home. “Jean” was born December 26, 1928 to Edwina and Francis Somers in Lima, OH. She is survived by her children, son Scott (Beverly) Penhorwood, daughters Jill (Matt) Staley, and Kathy (Keith) McClintock. Other survivors include 8 grandchildren, Lynne (Dan) Boyle, Scott (Melissa) Mondy, Wade (Steven) Penhorwood-Siytangco, Jon (Kate) Penhorwood, Cameron (Rachael) Staley, Rachel (Kenny) Foust, Bethany (Paul) Paschal, Cale (Cordelia) McClintock. Also, 13 great-grandchildren: Lex and Lainey Boyle, Trey and Lucy Mondy, Emory, Maci, and Jake Staley, Claire, Gwyneth, and Paul Foust, Kierney, Thatcher, and Oren Paschal, and numerous nieces and nephews. Also, a sister-in-law Phyllis Boyd, and close family friend Ruth Boyd.
She was preceded in death by her husband Kenneth J. Penhorwood, parents Edwina and Francis Somers, brothers David (Kathryn) Somers, Burton (Frances) Somers, sister Margaret Burget, father and mother-in-law Rev. Emory J. and Imogene Penhorwood, brothers-in-law David Boyd, Erwin (Ruth) Penhorwood, and Donald (Betty) Penhorwood.
Jean was a 1946 graduate of South High School. On September 19, 1948 she married Kenneth J. Penhorwood. Jean worked part-time for many years at Lima Publishing Company. She also worked for the Allen County Board of Elections for several years. She was a member of South Side Christian Church where she sang in the choir, participated in the Christian Women’s Fellowship, taught Sunday School, served as an Elder, and other various ministries. She also sang with the Lima Madrigals group, volunteered at Bath Elementary, and the Bath Stitch ‘n Rip 4-H Club.
Jean’s greatest joy was her family and her church family. She loved knitting, singing, spending time with her children and grandchildren, and watching them participate in their various activities. Jean was a loyal supporter and fan of the Bath Wildcats and the OSU Buckeyes. Ken and Jean raised their family leaving a legacy of a strong foundation of faith in God.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to all of Jean’s caregivers including: Mary Kantner, Pam Styer, Sherry Mattis, nephew Jim Penhorwood for home communion, Bluffton Mennonite Home Staff and Chaplain Bill Herr, Bridge Hospice, and Dr. David Neidhardt.
Friends may call from 1:00 to 3:00pm on Saturday, March 3rd at South Side Christian Church, with funeral immediately following at 3:00pm. Private Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery at a later date. Arrangements are by Chamberlain-Huckeriede Funeral Home. Donations may be made to South Side Christian Church, Bluffton Mennonite Memorial Home, or Bridge Hospice of Findlay.
