F. Vernon Schmidt "Smitty", 92 of Elida, Ohio died on Thursday, June 2, 2011, at Vancrest Health Care Center in Delphos, Ohio.
Born Saturday, November 2, 1918 in Greensburg, Kansas, he was the son of the late Louis Schmidt and the late Lodie Wadel Schmidt. He was the husband of Evelyn Cook Schmidt.
He was employed by Oriental Rug Company.
F. Vernon Schmidt "Smitty", age 92, died peaceably on Thursday, June 2, 2011 at Vancrest Delphos.Vernon graduated from college in Haviland, KS. in 1939 and moved to Ohio in 1942 for 1W Service at Lima State Hospital. Smitty retired after 40 years from the Oriental Rug Company in Lima and worked part-time at the Lima News. He never met a stranger and loved to make people laugh. Vernon was a faithful member of Salem Mennonite Church for 65 years. He was deeply devoted in his walk with the Lord. He also enjoyed golf and bowling and was in several leagues over the years. Smitty built looms and enjoyed teaching people how to weave. He was an avid gardener and loved to watch things grow. Vernon said he was happy to have lived a good long life. He was deeply loved and will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Surviving are sons, Dennis (Keva) Schmidt of Augusta, MI, Robert "Bill" (Neila) Dick of Munford, TN, Brian Dick of Windham, MN, Andrew (Elizabeth) Dick of Cadwell, OH and Charles Dick of Lima, OH, daughters, Mary (Jack) Bice of Elida, OH and Elaine Lewis of Lima, OH, brothers, James (Gladys) Schmidt of Hillsboro, KS and Irvin (Norma) Schmidt of Hutchinson, KS, sister, Geneva (Beryl) Spicer of Greensburg, KS.
He was predeceased by son, David Schmidt, brothers, Cecil (Mildred) Schmidt, Virgil (Velma) Schmidt, John (Mabel) Schmidt, Melvin (Wanda) Schmidt and Merle (Betty) Schmidt, sister, Lena (Lowell) Good.
A Funeral service will be at 10:30 AM on Monday at Salem Mennonite Church, Elida, Ohio with the Rev.Paula Snyder Belousek officiating. Interment will be in Salam Cemetery, Elida, OH.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Saturday, June 4, 2011, at Chamberlain-Huckeriede Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be sent to Salem Mennonite Church, Grace Children's Home, Henderson, NE or St. Rita's Hospice, 959 W. North St., Lima, OH 45805.
