George Barbier, 85, formerly of Elida, Ohio, died at 12:10 a.m. March 23, 2008, at St. Rita?s Medical Center. He was born March 7, 1923, in Hysham, Montana, to Achille E. and Erma Degraeve Barbier, who preceded him in death. On August 31, 1946, he married Reba Dew, who survives in Lima, Ohio. Mr. Barbier retired from Standard Oil Refinery after 38 years. He was a member of St. Gerard Catholic Church and its Holy Name Society. He was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1275. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving from February 4, 1943, to January 10, 1946, in the Philippines and Dutch New Guinea and Papua New Guinea. Following his retirement, he enjoyed cutting out wood crafts for his wife to paint and decorate. They enjoyed taking these to craft shows. He also enjoyed flower gardening, life and spending time with his family. He will be sadly missed by all. Survivors also include two sons, Stanley George ?Stan? (Mary) Barbier, of Lima, Ohio, and Michael William Barbier, of Findlay, Ohio; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; four step grandchildren; 12 step great-grandchildren; a step great-great-grandchild with another on the way; two sisters, Alice (Charlie) Boughman, of Mansfield, Ohio, and Lucille Sands, of Leipsic, Ohio; a sister-in-law, Fay Barbier, of Louisiana; several nieces and nephews; and his many friends. He was preceded in death by an infant son, an infant daughter, a sister and three brothers. Services will begin at 2 p.m. Thursday at Chamberlain-Huckeriede Funeral Home. Father George Blasick will officiate. Burial will be in Gethsemani Cemetery, with military rites by VFW Post 1275. Friends may call from 11 a.m. until time of services Thursday at the funeral home.
