George A. Elwood 82, died at 8:37 a.m. January 7, 2010, at his residence. He was born July 24, 1927, in Lafayette, Ohio to George A. and Donna Fern Kindle Elwood Sr., who preceded him in death. On March 6, 1949, he married Elizabeth C. Bicknell, who died January 11, 1997. Mr. Elwood retired as a high pressure engineer from Clark Equipment, after 30 years, where he had also been a welder, machinist and inspector. He then worked as a welder and fabricator at Trinity Industry, where he retired in 1992. He was a member of Pleasant View Church of the Brethren. He was a member of Sager Lodge 513 Free & Accepted Masons, where he was a master in 1968. He was a member of the Scottish Rite Valley of Dayton and the Order of Eastern Star, where he served as worthy patron eight times. He was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1275 and a member of American Legion Post 96, Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 371 and Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 199. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving from 1945 to 1946 aboard the USS Independence, a CVL22 aircraft carrier. Survivors include two sons, Edward E. Elwood and Kenneth A. (Caroline) Elwood, both of Lima, Ohio; a daughter, Debra L. (James) Gross, of Lima, Ohio; his companion, Betty Kohlhorst, of Beaverdam, Ohio; a brother, Herbert (Kay) Elwood, of Bluffton, Ohio; three sisters, Christine Wood, of Elida, Ohio, Carol Lawson, of Lima, Ohio, and Dorene Badertscher, of Beaverdam, Ohio; six grandchildren, Angela Myers, Thomas Elwood, David Elwood, Keri Carpenter, Jason Gross and Lucas Gross; and four great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Thomas A. Elwood Sr.; and seven siblings, Alice Davis, Agnes Ford, Charles Elwood, Gilbert Elwood, John Elwood and Lewis Elwood, and Hazel Lones. Services will begin at 11 a.m. Monday at Chamberlain-Huckeriede Funeral Home. Pastor Mark Bowyer will officiate. Burial will be in Lewis Grove Cemetery, with military rites by VFW Post 1275. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, where a Masonic service will be held at 8 p.m. followed by a Scottish Rite ring service.
