George T. Scheid, Jr., 95, died Friday, January 17, 2014 at 4:21 PM at his son's residence in Lima, Ohio.
George was born on July 20, 1918 in Lima, Ohio to the late George T. Scheid, Sr. and Anna Haver.
On April 14, 1942 he married Ruth M. Ribley at St. John's Catholic Church and she preceded him in death on March 15, 2005 after 62 years of marriage.
George began his plumbing career with his father and grandfather at George T. Scheid and Son Plumbing. He then became Street Supervisor for the City of Lima. He went on to become the Director of Facilities at Ohio Northern University, Ada. He returned to the City of Lima as the Public Works Director. Eventually he retired from Ohio Northern as the Director of Facilities in 1983. He was a founding member of St. Charles Catholic Church, a member of the Lima Sabres Gun Club, a 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus, a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association, a past president of the Public Works of Ohio Association, and a former member of the Jaycees. He also served on numerous boards and committees throughout the city. He was a retired Captain in the United States Army and was wounded during World War II and received the Purple Heart.
George had a great sense of humor up until the very end and was comfortable and caring to anyone at any level on both a personal and professional level.
Surviving are his three sons David T. Scheid of Salisbury, MD, Stephen M. Scheid of Granger, IN and Vince ( Tina) Scheid of Lima, OH; two daughters Elizabeth Ann "Skeeter" (Jim) Scheid of Springfield, VA and Susan Kay (Chris) Scheid of Washington, DC; 16 grand children and 16 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law Beverly Scheid and two sisters Mary Margaret Laibe and Eleanor Anna Watt.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 PM - 8:00 PM on Friday, January 24, 2014 at Chamberlain-Huckeriede Funeral Home, Lima with a parish wake service at 8:00 PM.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be on Saturday, January 25, 2014 at 10:00 AM at St. Charles Catholic Church, Lima with Rev. Stephen Blum officiating.
Interment will be at Gethsemani Cemetery, Lima with military graveside services conducted by VFW Post #1275.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Otterbein Retirement Living Community for their fitness addition or the "ROMEO" club.
