Gerald H. ?Gerry? Meyer, 96, died at 5:05 p.m. on August 4, 2010, at Springview Manor Nursing Home in Lima, Ohio. He was born January 29, 1914, in Fort Jennings, Ohio, to John Meyer and Margaret Wink Meyer, who have preceded him in death. On August 20, 1938, he married Mildred M. Strauer, who died January 10, 2007. Mr. Meyer was a charter member of St. Charles Catholic Church, Lima, Ohio, where he served as an usher for more than 50 years and was a fundraiser. He was involved in fundraisers for OSU-Lima, St. Rita?s Medical Center and the United Way. He had been an elections poll worker and volunteered at St. Vincent DePaul Food Pantry for more than 20 years. He was a credit sales manager at Blattner?s store from 1937 to 1960, when he went to work for the Better Business Bureau/Credit Union, where he became the agency?s chief executive officer/executive secretary in 1967. During this time he was also secretary/treasurer of the Credit Managers Association and secretary of the Lima Downtown Business Association. He served as secretary/treasurer of the Lima New Car Dealers Association from 1965 to 2008. While serving as CEO for the Better Business Bureau/Credit Union he was also a trustee and marketing chairman of the Associated Credit Bureau of Ohio, where he served on several committees. He loved some do-it-yourself projects, gardening and traveling. His business and pleasure travels took him to all 50 states and Canada from coast to coast, Mexico, the Caribbean and most of Western Europe. His family accompanied him on many of his trips. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving from September 1943 to March 1946, as a surgical technician in the Medical Corps in the European Theater. He was a life member and a Grand Knight for the Knights of Columbus, and a life member of the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 19, the American Legion Post 96 and the Lima Noon Seratoma Club, all in Lima, Ohio, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6772 in Spencerville, Ohio. Survivors include two sons, Ronald (Marilyn) Meyer, of Spencerville, Ohio, and David Meyer, of Albuquerque, New Mexico; three grandchildren, Amy Meyer, of Lima, Ohio, Ronald (Jessica) Meyer II, of Spencerville, Ohio, and Stacie Ball, of New York; three great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandson, Brodwick Tomberlin; a brother, Robert J. (Pat) Meyer, of Lincoln, Nebraska; three sisters, Joanna Lieb, of Barberton, Ohio, Clara (John) LaRontanta, of Lima, Ohio, and Betty Meyer, of Lima, Ohio; a sister-in-law, Katheryn Meyer, of Glandorf, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son, Gary P. Meyer; a sister, Mary Elizabeth Meyer; and three brothers, Lawrence Meyer, Phillip Meyer and Charles Meyer. A Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 7, 2010, at St. Charles Catholic Church, Lima, Ohio. The Rev. Steve Blum will officiate. Burial will be in Gethsemani Cemetery, Lima, Ohio, with military rites by the V.F.W. Post 6772 of Spencerville, Ohio, and American Legion Post 191 of Spencerville, Ohio. Friends may call from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, August 6, 2010, at Chamberlain-Huckeriede Funeral Home in Lima, Ohio, where a wake service will be held at 8:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Lima Central Catholic High School, Lima, Ohio, or the clown unit at VFW Post 6772, Spencerville, Ohio.
