Gladys L. Austin 82, died at 8:28 a.m. June 20, 2009, at Lima Memorial Health System. She was born March 16, 1927, in Clinton, Mo., to William F. and Ruth I. Boone Hassen, who preceded her in death. On Jan. 8, 1947, she married Raymond W. Austin, who preceded her in death. Mrs. Austin was a 1945 graduate of Alger High School, and she retired as a machine operator from Triplett Corp., Bluffton, Ohio. She later worked at Forget-Me-Not Garden Center, where she was known as Grandma, the Vegetable Lady. She was a member of the Royal Neighbors of America and the chapter of the Order of Eastern Star 121, a lifetime member of the Women?s Auxiliary of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1275 and the Alger Memorial Festival committee. She was a past den mother of Cub Scout Pack 52, in Harrod, and a member of the Women of Moose Chapter 52. She was an accomplished woodworker and enjoyed fretwork and scrollwork. Survivors include two sons, Gary E. (Jackie) Austin, of Harrod, Ohio, and Rodney D. Austin, of Sidney, Ohio; five grandchildren, Greg (Adrian) Austin, Jeff (Kristi) Austin, Kelli (Todd) Cosart, Allison (Jerry) Myers and Adam Austin; six great-grandchildren, Alexsandr, Caleb, Cole and Mallory Austin and Michaela and Camden Cosart; a special aunt, Edna (Larry) Kitchen, of Oltewah, Tennessee; and a niece, Joy Kitchen, of Oltewah, Tennessee She was preceded in death by a great-grandson, Zane Quinn Cosart. Services will begin at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Chamberlain-Huckeriede Funeral Home. Pastor Roger Emerson will officiate. Burial will be in Salem Westminster Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday and from 12:30 p.m. until the time of services Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Harrod United Methodist Church.
