Helen Jeanette Diller Lucas 83, died at 6:54 p.m. February 11, 2010, at her residence. She was born October 12, 1926, in Columbus Grove, Ohio to Virgil and Juanita Neuenschwander Diller, who preceded her in death. On October 17, 1967, she married Virgil Lucas, who died in October 1982. In 1983, she married Lavon Myers and they later divorced, but remained companions throughout the course of her life. Mrs. Lucas was a very kind and loving person. She loved doing things for her family and friends. She was a hard worker and loved working. Her family was very proud of all of her accomplishments. She was a graduate of Columbus Grove High School. She attended Bluffton College at the same time she owned and operated a restaurant in Bluffton. She had been a dietitian at Bucyrus Hospital, Bucyrus, Ohio. She had also managed the food service at Ohio Northern University, Ada, Ohio. She started teaching in 1968 in Lima City Schools, while she continued her education and received a master?s degree from Dayton University. She taught second, fourth, fifth and sixth grades. She retired in 1993, but continued to be a substitute teacher for 10 years. Following her retirement from teaching, she managed a sweatshirt stand at the Lima Mall. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. She had been a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, the Ohio Northern University Women, the Allen County Retired Teachers Association and the Ohio Retired Teachers Association. Survivors include a daughter, Susan Obracay-Lucas, of Heath, Ohio, who was her caregiver; eight grandchildren, Angela Neuenschwander, Tiffany (Tim) Gallent, Joseph Neuenschwander, Kevin (Jennifer) Moats, Kirstie (James) Druggan, Capt. Kyle (Kelli) Moats, Ellen Obracay and Tyler Colin Obracay; nine great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Ruth Geise, of Lima, Ohio, and Virginia Lang, of Texas. She was preceded in death by a son, Michael Neuenschwander; two sisters, Mary Ann Bruun and Maxine Gleason; and a brother, James Diller. Services will begin at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Chamberlain-Huckeriede Funeral Home. The Rev. Phyllis Fetzer will officiate. Burial will be in Truro Cemetery, Columbus Grove.
