HOWARD LAYMAN BETZ, 87, died at 10:55 p.m. March 4, 2005, at Ohio Masonic Home, Springfield,Ohio. He was born December 2, 1917, in Marion, Ohio to Harry E. and Ella Mae Layman Betz, who preceded him in death. On October 7, 1945, he married Marjorie Fike, who survives in Enon, Ohio. Mr. Betz was a trainman for the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad for 38 years. He was an active member of Lima Baptist Temple for more than 50 years. He was a member of Free and Accepted Masons Lodge 706, Veterans of Foreign Wars and 32nd Scottish Rite Mason, Valley of Dayton. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II from February 3, 1942, to October 1, 1945. His hobby was woodcarving. He went to be with the Lord. He had been married to his loving wife for 59 years. Survivors also include a son, Howard Neal (Carol) Betz of Enon, Ohio; a sister, Grace Fears of Dayton, Ohio; a brother, Robert (Joan) Stemen of Elida, Ohio; two grandchildren, Holly (Chris) Goris of Weston, Ohio and Angie Bernhardt of Enon, Ohio; a great-grandchild, Dillon Betz of Fort Wayne, Indiana; and a nephew, Jerry (Carol) Stombaugh of Livingston, Texas. He was preceded in death by a son, Walter Betz. Services will begin at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Lima Baptist Temple. Pastor Gary Hohman will officiate. Burial will be at noon Wednesday in Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Dayton. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today at Chamberlain-Huckeriede Funeral Home, where a Masonic service will be held at 8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Lima Baptist Temple or the charity of the donor's choice.
