James Schenk

James R. ?Jim? Schenk, 85, died at 11:59 a.m. May 7, 2010, at his residence. He was born January 10, 1925, in Lima, Ohio to Frank and Ida Patterson Schenk, who preceded him in death. On May 13, 1950, he married Mary Abigail ?Abby? Gast, who died September 27, 1987. Mr. Schenk worked at the Sohio Lima Refinery from 1951 to 1963 and then as an accountant at the R.G. Dunn Cigar Factory Superior Wholesale, where he retired in 1991. He was a charter member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, where he served as an usher. He was a life member of Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge 54, where he had been a member of its golf league along with his three golf buddies ?The Snakes,? Tom Gast, Dick Stolly and Frank DuVal. He also was a member of Knights of Columbus Council 2661, Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 370 and American Legion Post 96. He was a member of the Lima Host Lions Club, where he was awarded the highest honor for the Lions, the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award. He served five terms on the Lima Host Lions Club board of directors. He was a volunteer at St. Rita?s Medical Center for 13 years, 12 of those as a Hospice volunteer. He served three years in the Marine Corps, from September 3, 1943, to June 28, 1946, and he spent six months in Okinawa. He was a 1943 graduate of St. Rose High School, where he played football and baseball and maintained a perfect attendance record for all 12 years. He also attended Northwestern School of Commerce. Jim would like to thank the Hospice nurses as well as Kathy Bowsher and Tammie Swan-Manley for all the help and aid they gave him during his illness. Survivors include a son, James (Beth) Schenk, of Cincinnati, Ohio; two daughters, Anne (Brian) Levers and Sara Huffman, both of Lima, Ohio; seven grandchildren, Andy Levers, Joe Levers, Tim Levers, Steve Huffman and Paige Huffman, all of Lima, and Charlie Schenk and Will Schenk, both of Cincinnati; and a sister, Patricia ?Pat? Young, of Indianapolis. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Francis ?Frankie? Schenk and Paul Schenk, and a sister, Ruth Snyder. Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church. The Rev. Stephen Blum will officiate. Burial will be in Gethsemani Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Monday at Chamberlain-Huckeriede Funeral Home, where a Lions service will be held at 7:30 p.m. and a parish wake service at 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Lima Central Catholic High School Athletic Boosters, 720 S.
