John Allen,

John G. Allen Jr., 84, passed away peacefully in the loving comfort of his wife and daughter at 9:03 a.m. October 8, 2010 at Lima Memorial Health System. He was born November 21, 1925 in Lima, Ohio to John Allen and America Allen Allen Sr., who preceded him in death. He was married on September 7, 1988, to Joyce Shepherd, who survives. Mr. Allen retired as the operations director for Goodwill Industries after 14 years. Previously, he was a manager of DeHavens for many years. In the 1950s he managed his father-in-law?s chicken farm in Ada, the second largest in the state at the time. He was an artist and did portraits. He enjoyed woodworking after retirement, having the gift of creating beautiful furniture, and enjoyed working in the yard. He was a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge 54. He served in the U.S. Army from January 19, 1944, to May 31, 1946, during World War II. Survivors also include a son, Terry Ray (Nicole) Shepherd, of Lima, Ohio; two daughters, Sherry Kay (Bobby) Heidenescher, of Lima< Ohio, and Leslie Nearon-Buck, of Bellefontaine, Ohio; five grandchildren, Adam M. Nearon, Danielle M. Buck, Amber Rae Dodds, Skyler J. Heidenescher, and Peyton H. Shepherd; three great-grandchildren, Christian, Savannah and Isabella; two sisters, Eloise (Bud) Townsend, of Florida, and Barbara (Louie) Strayer, of California; and a sister-in-law, Marie Allen, of Wapakoneta, Ohio. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Cleo Gossard, and Addie May Andra; and three brothers, Issac Allen, Fay Allen, and Woodrow Allen. Services will begin at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Chamberlain-Huckeriede Funeral Home. The Rev. Terry Brock will officiate. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Lima. Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be sent to the American Kidney Foundation, c/o Lima Memorial Hospital, Lima, OH 45804.
