John LaRotonda

John James LaRotonda, 96 of Lima, Ohio died peacefully on Thursday, September 15, 2011, at his home. His wife was by his side and he was surrounded by his family.

Born November 23, 1914, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late James LaRotonda and the late Angelina Pasquriello LaRotonda. He was the beloved husband of Clara Meyer LaRotonda, who survives.

John was employed by Westinghouse for 42 years as an aerospace field service engineer and became a member of the Westinghouse Retirees Club. He was a parishioner of St. Charles Catholic Church. John was a member of the National Honor Society and graduate of Peabody High School, Pittsburgh, PA. He was also active in Track and Field and was City Champion of the 220 yard Relay & Running Broad Jump. He belonged to several organizations, including The Knights of Columbus and The Lima Management Club.

As one of his greatest accomplishments, he is recognized as a founder and first President of The Lima Symphony Orchestra. John had a great passion for music and displayed that passion as a violinist in the symphony orchestra for several decades. He was also responsible for re-establishing the Westinghouse band where he eventually met and courted Clara, who played French horn in the band. Following his retirement, he stayed actively involved with the symphony and enjoyed playing golf as a member of Tamarac Golf Club. He also continued to participate in the Westinghouse Aerospace Program in a consulting role.

He was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather. John's legacy will live on in his seven surviving children: Elaine LaRotonda of Redondo Beach, CA, Thomas (Carol) LaRotonda of San Diego, CA, Gregory (Teresa) LaRotonda of Pickerington, OH, Lynette (Terry) Beets of Roscoe, IL, Judith (Robert) Cantrell of Littleton, CO, Kathryn O'Neill of Gulfstream, FL, and Alan (Kimberly) LaRotonda of Millville, PA . Also of note are twelve grandchildren, and a Sister-in-law Elizabeth Meyer of Lima, OH. He is truly cherished and will be greatly missed by his family.

He was preceded in death by brothers, Joseph, Robert, and Anthony LaRotonda; and sisters, Della Smith, Helen LaRotonda, and Mildred Say.

Friends may call on Monday, Sept.19, 2011 from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at the Chamberlain- Huckeriede Funeral Home. A Parish Wake Service will be held at 8 PM.

Funeral services will be on Tuesday, September 20, at 11 AM at St. Charles Catholic Church.

Father Stephen Blum will officiate.

The burial will be in Gethsemani Cemetery.
