JOHN EVERETT ROOT, 76, died at 4:55 p.m. August 2, 2006, at St. Rita's Medical Center. He was born May 8, 1930, in Springfield, Massachusetts, to Albert E. and Doris P. Callahan Root Sr., who preceded him in death. On July 31, 1954, he married Louella Crow, who survives in Lima, Ohio. Mr. Root retired as a machine operator from Ford Motor Co. Lima Engine Plant, after 35 years. He was a member of St. Rose Catholic Church. He was a member of Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 370, where he was the doorman for several years. He played American Legion baseball in Lima for several years. He was an Air Force veteran. He was an avid card player and enjoyed walking his dog, Bucky. Survivors also include four daughters, Julie (Marion) Lee of Lima, Ohio, Vickie (Aimel) Gibson of Cridersville, Ohio, Darlene (Richard) Hammond of Dayton, Ohio and Lisa Marie Root of Lima, Ohio; two sons, Robert Steve Root and Jack E. Root, both of Lima, Ohio; two brothers, Albert E. (DeDe) Root Jr. of Lima, Ohio and Joe Root of Las Vegas, Nevada; a sister, Betty Hughes of Ottawa, Ohio; 11 grandchildren, Elaine (Rick) Miller of Cridersville, Ohio, Angela (Mike) Mox of Lima, Ohio, Brian (Deb) DuVernay of Harrod, Ohio, Niki (Rob) Lemin of Ada, Ohio, David Michael Gibson of Cridersville, Ohio and James (Marge Mason) Lee, Blaine Lee, Aaron Root, Kristy Hammond, Rick Hammond and Cindy Hammond, all of Lima, Ohio; 13 great-grandchildren, Tiffani Dawson, Emily Miller, Katherine Victoria Miller, Stacy Miller, Julie Lee, Jami Lee, Mason DuVernay, Ally DuVernay, Kyla Lemin, Jordan Hammond, Jenna Lee, Blaici Lee and Breonnah Hammond; and a great-great-grandchild, Trey Allen Parkison. He was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Charles Hughes; and a sister-in-law, Julia "Judy" Root. Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Rose Catholic Church. The Rev. William J. Rose will officiate. Burial will be in Gethsemani Cemetery.
