John F. Studer, 70 of Elida died on Monday, May 21, 2012, at his residence.
John was a kind, compassionate, generous and caring husband, father, grandfather and friend. He lived a rich life where his family was his pride and joy.
Born Saturday, February 28, 1942 in Lucas County, Ohio, he was the son of the late Edwin Studer and Bernice (Wilson) Studer.
John was a graduate of Anthony Wayne High School and earned a bachelor's degree from Case Western Reserve University where he was a member of Phi Gamma Delta. He later earned a master's degree from St. Francis University. A natural athlete, he excelled at football, basketball, baseball and hockey. In his long career at Shawnee Local Schools, he was a committed English teacher and dedicated coach. John started the district's first hockey program, served as an assistant varsity football and baseball coach and also volunteered as a little league baseball coach for many years. In his retirement, he enjoyed working with other retired teachers painting barns and houses. He also was an integral part of the family business, Buckeye Blooms. He loved history and gardening and was a dedicated volunteer at the Lima Children's Garden and the Gomer Welsh Museum. He was also a member of Gomer United Church of Christ. He was a gifted writer, passionate euchre player and an avid fan of both the Cleveland Browns and Indians. John felt the most joy working around the farm, his home for nearly 40 years, surrounded by the love of his family.
Survivors include beloved wife, Kay; daughter, Susan (Jeremy) King of Granville, Ohio; two sons, Joe (Sally) Studer of Newark, Ohio and Tom (Hannah) Studer of Phoenix, Arizona; two granddaughters,a�"the apple of his eye-- Ava and Kyra Studer; four brothers, Leon (Neva) Studer of Haskins, James Studer of Whitehouse, Walter (Sharon) Studer of Monclova and Alan (Sandy) Studer of Durango, CO; sister, Wilma (Raymond) Porter of Rockford, IL, sister-in-law Wilma Studer of Delta and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two brothers Rolland and Leslie Studer and a sister, Norma Rearick.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Friday, May 25, 2012, at Chamberlain-Huckeriede Funeral Home, 920 N. Cable Road, Lima.
A private family funeral service and celebration of John's life will be at a later date.
Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to the Children's Garden Endowment Fund.
