Julius Michael Hunt, 83, of Elm Grove, Wisconsin, formerly of Lima, Ohio, died at 8:18 a.m. May 4, 2008, at the Zablocki VA Medical Center, Milwaukee. He was born July 23, 1924, in Glynwood, Ohio to Julius David and Doris Moore Hunt, who preceded him in death. He married Louise Frances Sonderman , who survives in Elm Grove, Wisconsin. Mr. Hunt had been a teacher, coach and elementary school principal. He was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, West Allis, Wisconsin. He was a member of Knights of Columbus Council 2661, Lima, Ohio. He was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans, American Ex-Prisoners of War, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1275, Lima, Ohio, and the State Teachers Retirement System of Ohio. He was a 1942 graduate of St. Rose High School, received his bachelor?s degree in education from the University of Dayton and his master?s degree in education from Bowling Green State University. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving with Company B, 179th Infantry Division, from March 22, 1943, to November 12, 1945. He served in the mountains of Italy on the Winter Line in 1943 and at the invasion of Anzio, Italy, on January 24, 1944. He was captured on February 18, 1944, and served 14 months as a prisoner of war in Germany, in the work camps of Poland, and on the winter march from Poland to Hamburg, Germany, from February 1945 to April 13, 1945, before being liberated by American forces. Survivors also include three daughters Kathryn (Jordan) Moore, of Mequon, Wisconsin, Jane (Paul) Wehrley, of Elm Grove, Wisconsin, and Christina Hunt Thalgott, of Cincinnati, Ohio; a sister, Pauline (Ray) Kitchen; and two granddaughters, Bridget Lynn Moore and Claire Elizabeth Wehrley. He was preceded in death by a sister, Geraldine Martin; and two brothers, Alan Hunt and Dennis Hunt. Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Rose Catholic Church, Lima. The Rev. William J. Rose will officiate. Burial will be in Gethsemani Cemetery, with military rites by VFW Post 1275. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Chamberlain-Huckeriede Funeral Home, where a wake service will be held at 8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Rose Elementary School, Lima, or to the Soldiers Home Foundation for restoration of the old chapel on the grounds of Clement J.
