Karen Lynn Winters, 76, passed away at 5:20 p.m. on Monday, May 15, 2023, at E.W. Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, MI surrounded by her Michigan family.
Karen was born on February 13, 1947, in Lima, Ohio, to John and Barbara (Waymack) Prior. On September 10, 1967, she married her love, David M. Winters, who preceded her in death on February 14, 2012.
Karen was a member of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Lima. She was a life-long Lutheran, growing up in the church with amazing Lutheran League and adult leaders. She worked for the Appleseed Ridge Girl Scout Council as a teacher and naturalist. Most recently she worked as a partner with her husband at David Winters Tile Co. Karen also volunteered for Blood Services at the Red Cross and various groups and events around town. She completed the Correspondence Course of Ornithology from Cornell Lab of Ornithology. Karen was also an OSU fan.
She is survived by her special friend, Ray Prater of Mason, MI; her children: Rachel (Michael) Boyd of Holt, MI, Nathan Winters of Lima, OH, and Sarah (Anthony) Closson of St. Johns, OH; ten grandchildren: Nick Boyd, Chris Boyd, Tamara (JhaVante Washington) Lamon, Michael (Brittany) Brooks, Reagan Winters, Zachary Closson, Joseph (Jaimie Hodgson) Winters, Elizabeth Closson, Emma (David Horn) Closson, and Penelope Closson; great-grandchildren, Brinley Brooks, Jha-Marian Washington, Myli Featherstone, Hailo Featherstone, Agnes Winters, Ryze Hadden, Niyah Ruley, Perseus Closson, Cleo Horn, and Archer Horn; brother, Steven (Ginger) Prior of Sarasota, Florida, brother-in-law, Steve (Wilma) Winters of Lima, Ohio; and sister-in-law, Lesley King of Las Vegas, Nevada.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Timothy Lee Prior; a granddaughter, Leanna Featherstone; and a brother-in-law, John King.
The family will receive friends from 3 – 6 p.m. on Friday, June 9, 2023, at Chamberlain-Huckeriede Funeral Home, Lima, Ohio. A memorial service will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 10, 2023, at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, with visitation one hour prior to the service. Pastor Dave Westphal will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Daily Bread, Lima Rescue Home or West Ohio Food Bank.
