Kay N. Schamp,
71, passed away peacefully at 1:09 AM on Friday, May 26, 2017, at her residence in Lima.
Kay was born on Saturday, October 20, 1945, in Celina, Ohio to the late Clarence and Mary (Howick) Schockman. As a young adult, she worked in a factory and raised her 4 children before attending college and obtaining her Bachelor and Master's Degrees in Social Work from the Ohio State University in Columbus in 1991.
She worked at St. Vincent Children's Center in Columbus for 2 years and became a Licensed Independent Social Worker before moving to Lima to establish a private practice in Clinical Social Work in 1993. In addition to her private practice at Personal Growth Counseling in Lima, she also worked at the Family Resource Center in Findlay, Ohio. She specialized in working with children, adolescents, and families throughout her professional career until she retired in March 2016. She was a member of the National Association of Social Workers.
Kay was an extremely dedicated clinician and was respected and admired by both her colleagues and her clients. She embraced clinical challenges in her work, and was a caring and compassionate therapist who touched the lives of countless people.
She was an enthusiastic traveler and enjoyed many trips throughout the United States, Mexico, and Europe. She loved looking for wildlife on her vacations, and was especially fond of watching whales on her many trips to Hawaii. She took personal responsibility for feeding birds and squirrels at her home, and loved to watch them from her sun room.
Kay was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Lima. Her strong faith sustained her throughout her lung cancer journey over the final 27 months of her life.
She was a loving and supportive mother who encouraged her children in their personal and professional lives. She was a proud grandmother and great grandmother and loved to have her grandkids spend weekends at her home.
She is survived by her best friend, travel companion, and business partner, Rosalie A. Stluka of Lima; daughter, Gina (Ken) Schnipke of Lewis Center, son, Dennis (Letty) Schamp of Hilliard, daughter, Jill (Tim) Schamp-Clay of Tulsa, OK, and daughter, Kimberly (Scott) Taylor of Lewis Center; sister, Ann Donovan of Celina; grandchildren, Austin Schnipke, Claire Schamp, Evelyn and Sophia Taylor, and great granddaughter, Niele Sotelo-Schnipke.
She was preceded in death by grandchildren, Kyle and Amanda Schnipke and an infant sister, Jean Schockman.
Visitation will be held at Chamberlain-Huckeriede Funeral Home on Sunday, June 18, from 3:00-5:00 and 6:00-8:00 p.m. A brief Remembrance Service will be held at 7:45 p.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, June 19 at 10:00 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Lima, Ohio. Father David Ross and Father Jerry Stluka will officiate. Interment of ashes will be at Resurrection Cemetery in Lewis Center, Ohio on Tuesday, June 20.
