Kenneth V. Shaw, 89, of Cullman, Alabama, formerly of Allen County, Ohio, died July 6, 2009, at his residence. He was born February 18, 1920, in Allen County, Ohio to Jesse LeRoy and Opal Koneta Scholfield Shaw, who preceded him in death. His wife of 40 years, Dorcas Bosserman Shaw, preceded him in death. On January 20, 1984, he married Ozelle Lawrence, who survives in Cullman, Alabama. Mr. Shaw attended early schooling in Uniopolis, Ohio, Waynesfield, Ohio and high school at Harrod, Ohio, and he was a graduate in the class of 1939. After high school, he worked for the Nickel Plate Railroad as well as helping on the family farm. In early 1942, he was taken into the U.S. Army for four years, where he was with the 605 Tank Destroyer Battalion for a time in the states as a school battalion developing others in becoming tank destroyer officers, etc. Following this period, the battalion was sent to Europe where they saw combat duty until the end of the war. Following combat, the unit spent several months as occupation troops. Following his discharge from the service, he immediately moved to Troy, Ohio, where he became affiliated with the Fisher Funeral Home, where he started his training to become a mortician. Following his internship, he went to the Cincinnati School of Embalming. He graduated in the fall class of 1949, which was the largest class in the history of the school (1882) and also graduated summa cum laude and received the highest award, the Dr. A.J. Nunamaker Award. Following school, he return to Troy, Ohio until 1955, when he and his family of wife and sons Thad and Chris moved to Miami, where he became affiliated with the W.L. Philbrick Funeral Homes until he retired in 1983. He has always been a member of the United Methodist Church, starting first in Uniopolis, Ohio, then Troy, Ohio to Coral Gables, Florida, to Cape Coral, Florida, to the present time with the First United Methodist of Cullman, Alabama. He had his first start into the Lions Club in Troy, Ohio in 1954 then to West Miami Lions Club to the Coral Gables, Florida, Lions Club to the Cape Coral Lions Club and to the present time of the Cullman, Alabama, Lions Club. He served the Lions in many offices. He served the West Miami Lions Club as president in 1972-73 and the Cape Coral Lions Club as president in 1988-89. He was also very active with the Florida Lions Eye Bank, located in the Bascom Palmer Eye Hospital, which is part of the University of Miami School of Medicine. The Eye Bank is located in the building, but it is owned and operated by the Lions of Florida and the Bahamas. He served as president of the Eye Bank in 1991-92. He was a member of the Eye Bank Centaury Club as well as a recipient of the crusader for Lionism award in District 35 in 1988-89. He was a longtime member of the American Legion. Survivors also include two sons, Curtis (Sheryl) Shaw, of Davie, Flaorida, and Thad Shaw, of Hialeah, Florida; two brothers, Roger L. Shaw, of Lima, Ohio, and Larry (Carol) Shaw, of Lagrange; two sisters, Joyce LaDene (Charles) Hammer, of Avon Lake, and Wanda (John) Harrod, of Belle Center; six sisters-in-law, Sue Shaw, of Lima, Ohio, Earlene Huff, Louise Harris, Thelene Thomas, Imogene Huffstetler and Kathleen Gregory, all of Cullman, Alabama; a brother-in-law, Troy Lawrence, of Holly Pond, Alabama; three grandchildren, Andrew Shaw, Emily Shaw and Rebecca Shaw, all of Davie, Florida; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son, Christopher Shaw; a brother, Lynn ?Budd? Shaw; a brother-in-law, Lyle (Rita) Gossard; a sister, Barbara McCluer; and a sister-in-law, Dora Shaw. Services will begin at 1 p.m. Friday at Chamberlain-Huckeriede Funeral Home. Pastor Jean Horn will officiate. Burial will be in Auglaize Cemetery, Harrod, Ohio, with military rites by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1275. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
