Lucien C. "Lou" Cosyn

September 14, 1926 — May 26, 2023

Wooster, Ohio

Lucien (Lou) Cosyn, 96, passed away at 2:00 p.m. on May 26, 2023, at Smithville Western Care Center in Smithville, OH.

Lucien was born on September 14, 1926, in Hillegem, Belgium, to the late Victor and Cordula (De Mets) Cosyn. He emigrated to Canada with his family in 1932, and grew up in Leamington, Ontario. On October 1, 1949 he married Patricia Henneberry of Eastern Passage, Nova Scotia, who died on September 24, 2021, one week before their 72nd wedding anniversary.

Lucien attended the Ford Trade School in Windsor, Ontario, to become a machinist and tool & die maker, graduating in 1948. After marrying and starting a family, he emigrated to the United States, where he worked with several companies in Chicago and Detroit, before rejoining Ford Motor Company in Toledo. In 1973 he transferred to the Lima Engine Plant, where he worked as a process engineer until retiring in 1990. In addition to being a devoted husband and father, he was very active in his church and community, volunteering time to teach at the Apollo Career Center, serving on the board of directors at Hanley House, working with the Life Teen group at St. Charles, and offering his skills for various projects at church. The mangers he built are still displayed both outside and inside of St. Charles every Christmas season. A journeyman machinist, Lou also ran his own machine shop, and became known locally as “the man who can make or fix anything.” He loved making toys and wagons for children and was known for his irrepressible sense of humor and love of entertaining people. As a guitar player and singer, he was a founding member of a musical group affectionately known as “Lou’s Crew”, which entertained at local nursing homes and other events, as well as performing spiritual music at St. Charles.

He is survived by a brother, Albert of Oxley, Ontario; three children:  Jerome of Wooster, OH; Kelly Tilford of Oceanside, CA; John of Pompano Beach, FL; seven grandchildren: Rhonda Mangione, Patricia Kurian, James Cosyn, Erin Cosyn, Karen Kettner, Laura Goins, and Elizabeth Buckhannon; eleven great-grandchildren: Nicole Calungsod (USAF), Christian Kurian, Nathan Hajek, Anastasia Cosyn, Emma, Chloe, Logan & Violet Buckhannon, Ramey Kettner, Dylan & Tyler Bowers; and two great-great-grandchildren: Jordan and Lacey Calungsod.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Patricia, and two children, Sharon Trohler and Joseph Cosyn.
