M. Joan Sunderland

M. Joan Sunderland,
85 died Monday, June 24, 2013 at 3:10 a.m., at Otterbein Assisted Living.
She was born August 21, 1927 in Lima, Ohio to Leland Gossett and Gertrude Gossett Berry who preceded her in death.
On May 29, 1953 she married James L. Sunderland who survives. She worked 10 years as a secretary at Westinghouse and then stayed home with her children for 10 years. She was a 1945 graduate of Lima South High School and a 1971 graduate of the Lima School of Practical Nursing. She worked 20 years on the post surgical floor at Lima Memorial Hospital. As a hobby for 12 years she made ceramics and participated in many area Craft shows. After retirement she volunteered 3 summers at the Blue Caboose Tourist center and then joined the Lima Memorial Hospital Auxiliary accumulating 21,500 hours. She knitted 221 sets of hats and booties, 190 baby afghans and quilts for the O.B. Dept. and Gift Shop until Macular Degeneration stole her eye sight. She volunteered two years at Freedom Elementary as a mentor for Kindergarten and first grade children. She loved growing flowers and feeding the birds and squirrels who often would eat from her hand. Her little dogs Penny and Angel followed her every where she went.
She is survived by a son Jeffrey (Denise) Sunderland of Wilmington, Ohio; a daughter Jodi Harter of Alabaster, Alabama; a grandson Landen Sunderland of Wilmington, Ohio; a grandson Zachary (Gretchen) Harter of Rome, Georgia; a granddaughter Lindsay (Brian) Keen of Birmingham, Alabama; a half brother Larry (Vicki) Gossett of Celina, Ohio; a sister Maxine Leis of Lima, Ohio; a brother-in-law Robert (Mary Lou) Sunderland of Buckland, Ohio; a sister-in-law Judy Kingsborough of Fremont, Ohio.
There will be no funeral services. Private services will be held by the family at a later date.
Entombment will be at the Memorial Park Mausoleum
Contributions may be made to the Forest Park United Methodist Church of which she has been a member for 50 years.
