Margery Sande Bodensieck, known to friends and family as Sande, died peacefully in her sleep on Sunday, June 4, at the age of 95.
She was born on April 19, 1922, in Story City, IA to Elmer T. and Mabel Thompson Sande, who are deceased. She met her late husband, Ernst J. "Bodie" Bodensieck, at Iowa State University. They were married for 61 1/2 years and resided in The Cleveland, OH suburbs; Granada Hills, CA; Lynnfield, MA; Sacramento, CA; and Scottsdale, AZ before moving to Lima in 2001 to be near their daughter and son-in-law. In Lima they found a new extended family in the Eleys, as well as a church family at St. Luke's and a warm relationship with the caring staff of Lochhaven Assisted Living.
.
Sande gave birth to two children, Elizabeth Anne Bodensieck (Glen) Eley and Stephen Allen Bodensieck, who preceded her in death. Her grandchildren are Michael Meyer of San Jose, CA; Rachel (Deane) Eastwood of Melrose, MA; Nathaniel (Lila) Meyer of Portland, OR; Steven (Tiffany Brkich) Bodensieck of Woodland Hills, CA; Kristen (Chris) Lugo of Cathedral City, CA; and Alexandra (Elliott Smith) Bodensieck of Palm Desert, CA. Great-grandchildren are Anna Hamill, Katherine Meyer, Michael Raphael Meyer, Alexander Eastwood, Ilana Meyer, Hunter Lugo and Colten Lugo. Her great-great-grandson is Garrett Hamill.
Sande has maintained a life-long relationship with a group of friends from school and college. As these friends married and moved around the country, the Round Robin letter kept them connected. Year after year, the big manila envelope made its rounds, with each of the girls removing her old letter and photos, eagerly reading the latest news from the others, and enclosing a new letter and photos. Following their retirements, the group held reunions at the homes of its members, with the hosts planning sightseeing and dining. Two members of the group survive.
Graduating from Iowa State with a major in home economics, Sande was skilled in cooking, sewing, decorating, and making a beautiful home for her family. She loved plants and created an oasis in the Scottsdale home, growing figs, grapefruit, and lemons, as well as learning about and growing desert plants. She worked in retail, including a bridal department, and retired as credit manager for the Broadway Southwest, which is now part of Federated Department Stores.
Sande will be missed by those of us she touched, taught, baked cookies with, tied comforters with, and laughed with.
The memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, June 9 at St. Luke's Lutheran Church, Lima. There will be a time to visit with the family and view family pictures one hour before the service.
