Mary E. (Wellbaum) Schaaf passed away September 28, 2022, at Lima Memorial Health Systems.
Mary was born September 7, 1930 to Percy E. & M. Josephine (Shinkle) Wellbaum. She and William Charles Schaaf were wed June 25, 1948 in Covington, KY. After “Bill’s” passing January 5, 1975, she then spent her life with Robert F. (Bob) Schleeter until his passing July 22, 2000.
Mary and Bill had two children, Terry L. (Judy) Schaaf and Cathy S. Schaaf. Mary found great pleasure spending time with her grandchildren Angela M. (Jerry) Poe and Brian D. (Jennifer) Gerschutz. She especially loved talking about her great grandchildren J. Ryan (Jordan) Briley, Ava C. Gerschutz and Andrew G. Gerschutz. Mary is also survived by her sibling Jack E. (Karen) Wellbaum, numerous nephews and nieces.
She was preceded in death by her parents, sister Carolyn J. (Calvin) Waltz.
Mary took great joy in life’s simple moments and enjoyed time with her special friends Shirley (Les) Bailey, Dixie Coffman, Judy Hanthorn and Elsie Makris (d.). She enjoyed playing cards with her friends every Wednesday at Lafayette Community Center.
Mary was a longtime member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Lima and was a Sunday School teacher. She graduated from Lima Central High in 1948 and remained active with their reunions until the past few years. She attended The Ohio State University. Mary was the personnel director at Gregg’s Department Store for 36 years and payroll manager at Lima Convalescent Home until her retirement.
She volunteered as a docent at the Allen County Museum, C.U.P and tutored at Maplewood school.
Mary was an avid postcard collector “Send me a postcard” and enjoyed postcard and antique shows. Mary was a gifted artist and won several awards at the Allen County Fair.
Thank you to her favorite nursing staff at Lima Convalescent and the staff at Lima Memorial Hospital.
The family will receive friends from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Monday, October 10, 2022 at Chamberlain-Huckeriede Funeral Home, Lima, Ohio. A funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. Chaplain Glory Geib will officiate. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery, Lima.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society.
