Mary Jane Smith, 90 of Elida, Ohio died on Saturday, July 30, 2011, at 12:20 A.M. St. Rita's Medical Center, Lima, Ohio in Lima, Ohio.
Born Monday, October 25, 1920 in Lima, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Henry Cardone and the late Margaret Michael Cardone.
On April 26, 1941, in Lima, Ohio she married Charles Henry Smith who died June 6, 2000. They had been married 59 wonderful years and served together to educate America's Youth. Mrs. Smith received her bachelor's degree in education at Ohio Northern University and her master's degree in school administration and supervision at The University of Dayton. She and her husband had been teachers at Robin Rogers School. Mary Jane also taught at South Junior High and the Elida Local Schools. She had been a Sunday school teacher and taught Bible School in Lima. At Delphos St. John's Evangelist Catholic Church, she instructed RCIC and was a member of St. Gerard's Catholic Church of Lima. Mary Jane traveled to many places, but her favorite vacations were at the beach, especially Myrtle Beach, S.C. She attended sporting events and school programs at the Elida Local Schools and Delphos St. John's School. Her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren will always remember her supportive and fun-loving spirit that surrounded them with love. We will miss her smiles, laughter, and willingness to help other people.
Thoughts of appreciation are given to the doctors and nurses of St. Rita's Medical Center. Thank you to Dr. Hector Buch, Dr. Balusu, and Dr. Waldron for their kindness and medical care throughout the years.
Surviving are son, Jerry (Carolyn) Smith of Elida, OH, daughters, Evalynne "Mickey" Smith of Lima, OH and Janet Adkins of Lima, OH,, four grandchildren, Catherine & James Grothouse of Delphos, Ohio, Mark & Renee Smith of Elida, Ohio, Sean & Deb Adkins of Van Wert, Ohio, Elaine & Mark Davis of Harrod, Ohio, five great grandchildren, Ericka Smith, Andrew Grothouse, Emilee Grothouse, Olivia Smith, and Abigail Smith, four sisters, Betty Archer of Indian Lake , OH, Margaret Mefferd of Lima, OH, Flora DeVoe of Indian Lake, OH and Nelda Cardone of Lima, OH., a brother, Dr. Charles & Jean Ann Cardone of Cincinnati, Ohio, a brother-in-law Bernard Schenk of Lima, Ohio. Numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Close friends of the family, A.J. Theuer and Haylee Davis.
She was predeceased by daughter, Patricia Jean Smith, Son-in-law, Doyle Adkins, sisters, Christina Marie Cardone and Patricia Schenk, three brothers-in-law, Jack Archer, Richard Mefferd, and Fred "Bud" DeVoe.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 AM on Tuesday at St. John's Evangelist Catholic Church, Delphos, Ohio with the Rev. Charles Obinwa officiating. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Lima, OH.
The family will receive friends from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM and a Wake Service will be at 8:00 PM on Monday, August 1, 2011, at Chamberlain-Huckeriede Funeral Home.
