Rex William Roberts
73, died at 4:37 AM on February 8, 2015 at St. Rita's Medical Center, Lima, Ohio
Rex was born on Tuesday, January 27, 1942, in Lima, Ohio, to the late Robert Reese Roberts and Mary Marceil (Leatherman) Roberts.
In his youth, he was a Boy Scout, earning the awards of Eagle Scout, Order of the Arrow and God and Country. Rex graduated from Lima Senior High School in 1960. During high school, he was on the tennis team and was the manager for the basketball team.
He was a graduate of Ohio University. While in college, he was on the Bobcat tennis team and a member of the Beta Kappa Chapter of the Beta Theta Pi Fraternity.
After college, he served in the United States Navy aboard the submarine, U.S.S. Gato, as a nuclear engineer. After serving in the Navy, he worked for, and eventually retired from, the General Dynamics Tank Plant in Lima. He also worked for the Chrysler Tank Plant, Sheller Globe Superior Coach and Erie Railroad.
He was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, Lima.
Rex loved playing tennis. He was a former member of the Orchard Hill Tennis Club and Westside Swim and Racquet Club. He was also an avid fan of The Ohio State University's football and basketball teams and the Cincinnati Reds.
He was a YMCA leader and a Lima Spartan sports booster. He enjoyed music, especially choirs. He also enjoyed fishing, Indy 500 races, dogs and Lima Locos baseball. He was a member of The Investment Club, Elks Lodge #54-BPOE, Allen County Humane Society and the Northwest Ohio Welsh Society.
He is survived by: two brothers, Todd Jay Roberts, Bradenton, FL, and Brett Owen (Mary) Roberts, Groton Long Point, CT; nephew, Jacob O. (Amy) Roberts; two nieces, Ava Olivia Roberts, and Alexandria Roberts and nephew, Jon O. Roberts.
He was preceded in death by: grandparents, W. Harold (Mae) Leatherman and Ezekiel (Mabel) Roberts; an aunt, Wanda (Fred) Butler and two cousins, James Butler and Robert Butler.
Rex's cremated remains will be interred at Pike Run Cemetery, Gomer at a later date.
