Richard Burdette "Haywire" Billingsley went to the Lord on Thursday, April 11, 2013 at 1:30 P.M. at Lima Convalescent Home.
He was the oldest of 5 children born to Don & Florence Billingsley in Columbus Grove, Ohio, on August 21, 1926. They preceded him in death.
In 1938,
Richard was instrumental in developing the Boys Scouts program in his hometown. During WWII he attended Columbus Grove High School and was drafted his senior year into the United States Army. Richard served in the Southern Philippines Campaign with the 31st Division, 155th Infantry and was awarded the Bronze Star. He received his diploma from Columbus Grove High School in 2003.
June 27, 1949, Richard married Betty Jean Smith in Cairo, Ohio. They were married for 63 years. They had two children: Pamela and Mark. The Detroit, Toledo & Ironton Railroad employed Richard as brakeman, conductor and assistant train master until his retirement in 1983.
He was Past-Commander of the American Legion, Post 96, Lima, Ohio; member of the 40 & 8; member of the Masonic Lodge, Ft. Amanda #706, Lima, Ohio, and a lifetime member of the VFW. Richard was a member of Westside United Methodist Church, Lima, Ohio and The Young AT Heart group at Centerville United Methodist Church, Georgia.
Survivors include: his wife, Betty ("Best Pal"); daughter, Pamela (Steve) Gilliland of Warner Robins, Georgia; son, Mark (Linda) Billingsley of Lima, Ohio; 5 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren
He was preceded in death by: twin sisters, Marie Workman, and Mary Ann Briggs; and two brothers, Donald Billingsley and Dennis Billingsley.
Visitation will be from 2:00 PM- 4:00 PM Sunday April 14, 2013 at Chamberlain-Huckeriede Funeral Home.
Memorial Service will be at 4:00 PM with Pastor Bill Cronk and Rev. Dennis Alger officiating, with Military Rites by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #1275.
Ashes will be interred at Memorial Park Cemetery at a later date.
