Richard “Rich” Edward Hensley, 79, passed away at 4:45 p.m. on Tuesday, January 19, 2021, at St. Rita’s Medical Center in Lima.
Rich was born on February 28, 1941, in Dayton, Ohio, to the late Harry Edward and Charlotte (Laker) Hensley. On July 28, 1974 he married Lynda D. (Hall) Hensley who preceded him in death on December 21, 2020.
Rich was a graduate of William Jewell College in Liberty, MO. He had a Masters in Education from the University of Dayton and a Masters in Administration from Ohio Northern University. Following graduation from William Jewel College, Rich taught for 2 years at an Indian school out West. From 1966 – 1969 he began his teaching career at Central Jr. High where he taught Spanish and Civics; from 1969 – 1991 he taught American History, Social Studies, and served as Athletic Director at North Jr. High. From 1991-1992 he served as Assistant Principal and Guidance Counselor at North Jr. High; and from 1992-1996 he taught Social Studies at West Jr. High. He retired July 1, 1996 after 25 years of teaching in the Lima City Schools.
He was a member of South Side Christian Church, where he served as an Elder for many years and was currently an Elder Emeritus. He was a member of Allen County Retired Teachers Association, a member of Sertoma, Lima Lodge #205, Scottish Rite - Valley of Dayton. He was a member of the Board of Directors of Pilgrim Place and Top Mark Federal Credit Union. Rich had worked at Siferd Funeral Home and then Chamberlain-Huckeriede Funeral Home as a greeter and funeral attendant.
He is survived by his brother, Robert (Nancy) Hensley of Dayton; eight nieces and eight nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; infant daughter, Rachael Elizabeth Hensley; five sisters: Mary (Eugene) Semons, Virginia (Harold) Geist, Patricia (James) Tisdale, Betty Keiter and Marjorie Guerrero.
Due to Covid the visitation, service, and graveside burial will be private. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Rev. Todd Cosart and Rev. Wanda Werking will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to South Side Christian Church or Deb’s Dogs.
