Richard H. "Dick" Mavis,
died at 3:18 AM on Wednesday, April 09, 2014, at St. Rita's Medical Center, Lima, Ohio.
He was born September 27, 1922 at Paulding, Ohio, the son of the late Loren F. and Margaret (Hoover) Mavis who preceded him in death. On June 1, 1955 he married Rita Anderson Montgomery of Van Wert, Ohio. She preceded him in death on February 13, 2012.
He was a graduate of Grover Hill, Ohio, High School and was class valedictorian. He received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Economics at Oberlin College, and a Masters Degree at the Medill School of Journalism, Northwestern University.
Mr. Mavis was a veteran of World War II and served with the 84th Infantry Division in Europe. He received the Good Conduct Medal, the American Campaign Medal, the Combat Infantry Badge, the European Campaign Medal with 3 Battle Stars, and the Bronze Star. His Battalion was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation.
In 1950 he was employed as production manager of the News-Gazette Printing Company in Lima. He retired as part owner of the company at the end of 1977. He returned to work in 1978 at the Las Cruces (New Mexico) Sun-News and finally retired at the end of 1983. After seven years of retirement in El Paso, he and his wife returned to Lima in 1989. He was a member of the South Side Christian Church in Lima.
He enjoyed playing and listening to the big band music of the swing era. He was a lifelong Cincinnati Reds Baseball fan.
Survivors include a daughter, Linda Kay (Ronald) Thomas, of Fairfax Station, VA; two grandchildren, Jeffrey Thomas, of Chester, VA, and Lori (Martin) Kelly, of Purcellville, VA,; three great grandchildren, Ashlinn , Laurence and Fintan Kelly; and a sister, Rosalie Perry, of Novi, MI.
Services will be held on Friday, April 11, 2014 at 11:00 A.M. at Chamberlain-Huckeriede Funeral Home, with visitation one hour prior to the time of service. Rev. Wanda Werking officiating. Burial of ashes will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Lima, OH. at a later date.
