ROBERT E. BOWERS, 78, died at 6:15 a.m. July 26, 2005, at Lima Convalescent Home. He was born June 5, 1927, in Allen County, Ohio to Lewis Wesley and Nannie Fay Long Bowers, who preceded him in death. On June 5, 1949, he married Carol E. McMichael, who survives in Elida, Ohio. Mr. Bowers was a farmer and had retired as a cutter/grinder from Ford Motor Co. Lima Engine Plant, after 30 years. He was a member of Westside United Methodist Church and a former member of High Street United Methodist Church. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6772, Spencerville, the American Township Grange, the Farm Bureau, Ford Retirees Local 1219, MEL Club at Ford, the Elida Band Boosters and the Gomer Dads Club. He was a 56-year member of Lodge 205 Free & Accepted Masons, and a member of Scottish Rite Valley of Dayton and Chapter 16 Order of Eastern Star. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving from June 14, 1945, to April 25, 1946, in Manila, Philippines. Survivors also include three daughters, Beverly (Ron) Graham of St. Petersburg, Florida, Nancy (Brad) Sherrick of Elida, Ohio and Brenda Bowers of Canal Winchester, Ohio; two grandchildren, Heather Sherrick and Heath Sherrick; and several brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Frank Bowers, Ray Bowers, Paul Bowers and Jack Bowers. Services will begin at 11 a.m. Friday at Chamberlain-Huckeriede Funeral Home. The Rev. William Cronk will officiate. Burial will be in Allentown Cemetery, with military rites by VFW Post 6772. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, where a Masonic service will be held at 8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Elida Rescue Squad.
