Robert "Bob" Lynn Dungan

August 15, 1950 — July 23, 2018

Robert L. Dungan (Bob)

graduated to Heaven on Monday, July 23, 2018 at 10:45am at the James Cancer Center in Columbus, Ohio.

Bob was born on August 15, 1950 in Lima, Ohio to the late Robert and Buella {Beck} Dungan.

Bob was an active member of Open Door Baptist Church where he served as deacon and head of the children’s ministry for several years. He always had such a love for children and served in various children’s ministries for over forty –three years. The Lord allowed Bob to effect and love so many children and others that the numbers would be impossible to count. And yet He would be sure to say that it was not him, but the God he served working through him. Bob wanted so much for everyone to know His Jesus and be assured of their eternal destination.  It was not uncommon to hear him ask people many times, “if you died today do you know where you would spend eternity?”  This was so important to him that even from his hospital bed at the end, as long as the Lord gave Him voice, he was asking the hospital staff that very question. He encouraged others and exemplified in his own life his motto of, “Serve God with all your heart, leave nothing behind.”

He leaves behind a loving wife, Marilee Dungan to whom he was married almost forty-nine years. She always referred to him as her “hero, “as he was able to do and fix almost anything and loved and protected her in such a complete and special way. The love they shared and the years of service together for the Lord truly exhibited a love story admired by many.

Bob and Marilee have three children who also survive him. Laura (Brent) Tidd, Lima, Ohio; David (Sally) Dungan, Florida; and Matt Dungan, Texas. He has four grandchildren: Abby/Jacob Dungan, Walter Tucker, and Josiah Tidd, a sister Paulette (Kenneth) Stemen and a nephew Bob Jones.  His children and grandchildren will always cherish and carry with them the legacy of love and Godly principles he instilled in them.

Bob truly loved the Lord, and daily lived out his life verse of Psalm 37:5: Commit thy way unto the Lord; trust also in him, and he shall bring it to pass.  Even in the throes of his battle with cancer, and the many other difficulties of life, his family almost daily heard him ask, “What day is it?” And the answer would always ring back, “This is the day the Lord hath made we will rejoice and be glad in it.” Psalm 118:24.

He loved fishing, and gardening, hunting and flint knapping. He truly had a gift for the creative and his home was always popular each season as the neighboring people would enjoy watching to see what he would plant and cultivate next. It was a true joy to him this year, as before his passing, he received an award for Lima Pride of Homes. His sense of humor was contagious, and made his home a place of joy and laughter.

Sorely missed, his loss for those left behind is not different than others who have suffered the same process. Yet even in this, God is glorified as Christ in us is the hope of glory. His family has no doubt where Bob is and that they will see him again. So for all who read this tribute, and in honor of Bob’s ultimate desire, “If you died today do you know where you would spend eternity?” There is only one way, Jesus Christ. John 3:16 – For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
