Roger Allen Black, 86, passed away at 10:50 p.m. on July 25, 2024, at Vancrest of Delphos.
Roger was born on March 9, 1938, in Adena, Ohio, to the late Mitchell M. “Mike” and Irene C. (Dorsey) Black. On June 18, 1965, he married his love, Mary Ellen (Frykman) Black, who survives in Lima.
Roger attended Lima Central High School. He retired from Ford Motor Company, Lima Engine Plant on January 1, 1990, after 30 years with them. He was a member of the United Auto Workers #1219, and a member of Fraternal Order of Eagles #471.
Roger coached the Hornets Midget Football Team for many years. He spent much of his adult life playing and coaching slow pitch softball in Lima. He was privileged to coach in the slow pitch softball major division and his teams won 8 World Series Championships. He was a former member of the American Softball Umpires Association.
Roger enjoyed spending time with his wife, children, and grandchildren. His ‘special’ boy, Duke, was his constant companion.
Along with his wife, he is survived by his son, Mark Allen (Katherine) Black; daughter, Tammy Lynn Holme; grandchildren: Shanda Marie Holme, Alexander J. (Rochelle) Black, Tyler M. E. Holme, and Stephanie Stout; great-granddaughter, Ray Black; brother-in-law, Richard M. (Diane M.) Frykman; sisters-in-law, Susan J. (James) Olsen and Deborah Black; and several nieces and nephews as well as great-nieces and nephews.
In addition to his own parents, he was preceded in death by his in-laws, E. Verner and Lizzie (Borchers) Frykman; brothers, Mitchell “Moot” (Genia) Black, Bruce (Wendla) Black and Jack Black.
The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Friday, August 2, 2024, at Chamberlain-Huckeriede Funeral Home, Lima, Ohio. The funeral service will follow at 12 noon. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery, Lima.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to American Diabetes Association, 471 E. Broad St., #1630, Columbus OH 43215 or World Ward II Fund, P.O. Box 23143, Pittsburgh, PA 15222, or donor’s choice.
