Shirley Dawn Hetzler, 89, passed away due to Covid related complications at 9:53 p.m. on Thursday, February 4, 2021, at St. Rita’s Medical Medical Center in Lima.
Shirley was born on November 16, 1931, in Brookville, Pennsylvania, to the late Robley D. and Mildred V. (Milron) Evans. On October 14, 1950 she married Joseph Arthur Hetzler who preceded her in death on October 13, 2015 after 65 years of marriage. Shirley was a homemaker, devoted to her family. She was a member of Phi Beta PSI Sorority-Iota Sigma Chapter and the VFW Auxiliary Post #6772.
Over the years, Shirley and Joe enjoyed many family vacations across the United States and Canada visiting relatives and friends. All the special trips they took together with friends and living in various locations in Florida with close family and friends was something they talked about frequently. When health problems brought them back to Ohio, they lived in the Lima area and were close to family and enjoyed their time together. Shirley really liked bingo, shopping, knitting, listening to music and going out to eat. She said more than once ‘Girls need to shop!’. She was always asking about what was going on in the life of all her family and friends. And long hugs were always given freely. Frank Sinatra music was being played as she passed away.
She is survived by her three daughters: Patricia Croman of Marion, OH, Catherine (Michael) Chill of Marion, OH and Lesa (Jim) Wende of Lima; son, Robley (Shelly) Hetzler of Monongahela, PA; six grandchildren: April (Jayson) Hills, Shannon (Bill) Self, Veronica (Mark) Hawk, Lidija (Ryan Plokhooy) Wende, Sarah Hetzler and Rachel Hetzler; eight step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren with one on the way; eighteen step-great-grandchildren and one great-great step grandchild.
Along with her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her son, David Hetzler; brother, Robley Evans; brother, Roy (Lee) Evans; sister, Margaret (Les) Farmer; brother-in-law, Frederick Hetzler; and sister-in-law, Doris (Don) Myers.
The family would like to thank St. Rita’s Spiritual Care team for providing Zoom meetings for family visits and Chaplain George for his support.
There will be a private family graveside service at Memorial Park Cemetery, Lima, OH.
