VERNON E. CAPLINGER, 74, died at 2 a.m. March 23, 2006, at Lost Creek Care Center. He was born June 15, 1931, in McGuffey, Ohio to Quinten and Helen Spurlock Caplinger, who preceded him in death. On August 26, 1972, he married Shirley Bertrand, who survives in Lima, Ohio. Mr. Caplinger retired as a truck driver. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1275 and Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 1533, Indian Lake. He was a life member of the 23rd Infantry Regiment. He was an Army veteran serving from October 15, 1950, to October 28, 1951. Survivors also include three stepchildren, Kathy (Dr. Dennis) Pierson of Lima, Ohio, Rusty (LuAnn) Kaufman of Wapakoneta, Ohio and Vickie (Kendall) House of Lima, Ohio; a daughter, Debra Caplinger (Carlos) Dearmon of El Paso, Texas; a sister, Alberta Caplinger Bailey of Eaton Rapids, Michigan; and nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sons, Steven Caplinger and Scott Caplinger. Memorial services will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at Chamberlain-Huckeriede Funeral Home. The Rev. Dr. Joseph Bishman will officiate. Burial will be in Walnut Hill Cemetery, New Hampshire, Ohio, with military rites by VFW Post 1275. Friends may call one hour prior to services Saturday at the funeral home.
