Vernon H. Schulien 87, died at 8:35 a.m. January 11, 2008, at Springview Manor Nursing Home. He was born July 31, 1920, in Delphos, Ohio to Hilary Joseph and Lena Wells Schulien, who preceded him in death. On June 16, 1956, he married Marjorie Quinn, who died June 9, 1975. Mr. Schulien opened Schulien Pure Oil Service Station in 1939 in partnership with his uncle, Joseph Schulien, and continued in the business after World War II. He retired from Tomlinson Brake and Spring after 20 years of service in outside sales. He was a member of St. Gerard Catholic Church and attended St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1275 and Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 370, both in Lima, and a past member of the Knights of Columbus and Lima Management Club. He was a member of St. Rose Class of 1938 and served in the Army from September 1942 through May 1945, serving in Okinawa. He was a wonderful father, active and respected in the community. Survivors include three sons, Charles (Patricia Koch) Schulien, of Portland, Ore.; David M. (Laura) Schulien, of Lima, Ohio, and Tim Schulien, of Toledo, Ohio; two granddaughters, Brandi Anderson and Gina Burks; a brother, Paul (JoAnn) Schulien, of Lima; and a sister-in-law, Ella Mae Schulien, of Tucson, Ariz. Preceding him in death were a brother, Glen Schulien; an uncle; Joseph Schulien; and an aunt, Ruth McGue Schulien. A Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Rose Catholic Church, Lima, Ohio. The Rev. William J. Rose will officiate. Burial will be in Gethsemani Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Chamberlain-Huckeriede Funeral Home, where a parish wake service will be held at 8 p.m. Tuesday.
